Gro-Egg Room Thermometer
by ots1987 Our flat is quite cold and drafty. In the winter it gets too cold from the lack of double glazing or proper insulation. In the summer, it gets too hot as we have huge windows in the front room which hold the heat all day. When we were expecting Oscar, I was worried about his room being either too hot or too cold. A baby's ... room should be between 16 and 20 degrees celsius, with optimum temperature of 18 recommended by the FSID organisation. I got a free wall thermometer in my Bounty pack when I was in hospital which I used for the first couple of months. When he went in his cot, so was no longer right next to me, I wanted a thermometer that I could see instantly whenever I woke in the night. Someone recommended the Gro Egg. I bought one from Amazon for £14.46. It came boxed, with a mains plug and user information leaflet. It was quick and very easy to set up. It has a digital view window in the middle, which clearly shows the temperature of the room and either a sad or happy face, depending on the temperature. The whole egg-shaped unit has a yellow backlight, which is light enough to act as a nightlight in a baby's room. If the temperature drops below 16 degrees, the light turns blue and a sad face appears on the viewing window. If it goes between 21 and 24 degrees, the light turns orange. This shows that it is getting warm in the room, but not too warm. If it goes above 24 degrees, the light goes red and a sad face appears again. It was so helpful for me to have this thermometer when Oscar was tiny. We set our central heating to turn off over night, and occasionally it does drop below 16. If I woke in the night and saw that the thermometer was blue, I could either put an extra blanket on Oscar, or turn the heating on for a bit. If I had just been using a normal thermometer, I wouldn't have known that it was too cold. Read the complete review |

Gro-Egg Room Thermometer
by bluebell190 I was given this as a gift for my baby this Christmas by a friend. I am actually really pleased with it, I would never have bought a thermometer this expensive myself, but it is a nice gift to receive and I use it now every day. This is priced at around £15 in places like John Lewis, Amazon. This is a lovely thermometer for the ... price. This thermometer is shaped like an egg and it isn't too big or bulky. It is around 20cm in height, and is really lightweight. You do not need batteries for this thermometer you plug it in at the wall. This was the only problem for me, finding a surface free to put it on near a plug socket, I think I would prefer it if it was battery powered, so I could take it from room to room more easily. My baby sometimes sleeps downstairs in the day, and plays downstairs most of the time, so I have to keep unplugging it and taking it downstairs and plugging it in again, to make sure the room temperature is right downstairs too. This thermometer is very different to other normal thermometers. It does display the temperature on the front, but you don't have to worry about the exact temperature as the Gro-Egg lights up different colours to show you if the room is too hot or cold. It lights up blue if the room is too cold, and if the room is perfect the Gro-Egg is yellow. When it gets a little warm it goes orange, and finally red if the room is too hot. Once you are used to what colour means what, you can simply just look at the grow eggs colour to see if you need to alter the room temperature, or just add or remove layers for your baby. I think this is such a good invention! For people who don't really know what temperature the room should be in, this is perfect at letting you know if it's too hot or cold for your baby. The Gro-Egg looks cute in my babies room, and the light is quite bright too. It allows me to see my baby when I check on him during the night, but it is not too bright to disturb him. It doesn't allow enough light to see what you are doing properly, like feeding or changing them in the night, just a nice glow to see your baby better in the dark to check on them. I have tested this against two thermometers I already had in the house, and the temperature is accurate. This Gro-Egg gives me peace of mind that the temperature is comfortable for my baby, and if it changes I can see clearly, and adapt the room as soon as I see it change colour. I love the look of the Gro-Egg, it is cute, it doesn't look ugly like other room thermometers do, and I love that it can be used as a night light too. I am very impressed with this Gro-Egg, I would definitely recommend purchasing, it is definitely worth £15, I would have thought it would have cost a lot more than that, I was surprised when I looked it up on google, as it is a strong and sturdy egg too, and can see it lasting for years. If you are wondering which thermometer to get for your babies room, definitely get one of these! Read the complete review |

Gro-Egg Room Thermometer
by mrsgladwin I love being a mum but the one thing I do struggle with is the constant worry that having children involves. It seemed as soon as I found out I was expecting I was bombarded with horror stories. Don't do this, don't that... It was all a little overwhelming. One main worry was the fear of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, or cot death as its ... more commonly known. All the information I was given emphasised the importance of never overheating your little one, as being too warm increased the chance of cot death. I was therefore really conscious that I didn't want my little ones wrapped up in too many layers, and yet there's a fine line between not overheating your baby, and allowing them to become cold. That's where this little beauty comes in! The Gro-Egg is made by the same company that brought out the Gro-bags (baby sleeping bags for those not in the know!) The basic idea of the egg is to provide an accurate room temperature to allow parents to make the right decision regarding heating and how to dress their little one for bedtime, and what kind of blankets / sleeping bags to use. The selling point that makes this unlike all the other basic room thermometers, is that the egg changes colour depending on the temperature of the room. If the egg is yellow it indicates a perfect temperature, if it's blue the room is too cold and if it's red the room is too hot. So we decided that the Gro-egg was something we needed and we got ours from amazon for around £18 although i think you can now get them for around £14. After taking it out the box we could see it was a decent size and it looked quite appealing. It's basically egg shaped (obviously!) but the base is flat meaning it stands easily on a flat surface. The egg turns on with a basic on /off switch and plug connector slots easily in the back. The Gro-Egg is mains operated meaning you don't need batteries. This is both a plus and a negative in my opinion! It's great that your not constantly having to fork out on batteries but the fact it has a wire was frustrating for us. The wire connecting to the plug isn't particularly long and so we had to find a surface to put it on that was close enough to a plug socket. Annoyingly this meant we had to practically rearrange our baby's bedroom to put everything in the right place! The screen is a decent size that has a digital display so you have an accurate idea of the temperature of the room. As mentioned earlier the colour of egg will change depending on the temperature of the room. We initially thought that is feature would be a bit of a novelty but it really is a great feature. Our little one is a very light sleeper so if you go into his bedroom to check on him he stirs, usually resulting in me and the hubby trying to escape the room like ninjas before he wakes up completely. The great thing about this thermometer is you can see the temperature is at a safe level without even entering the bedroom, just by seeing the colour. Having said that, this feature does work much better when it's dark. We found that summer evenings when it was still light at bedtime, and for when he was taking a day time nap, the lights weren't as noticeable. Luckily the large display screen stopped it from being too much of an issue. The egg also has the added bonus of acting as a night light. It provides a subtle glow that isn't too bright to disturb my little one while he's sleeping but did provide enough light for me to be able to enter the room for night feeds without having to turn out the main light. The egg comes with a guide explaining what clothes your little one should be wearing and what blankets they should be using depending on the temperature. This is great for an over anxious first time mum, and reassuring to know that you aren't cooking your little one, or leaving them to freeze. There's a few things to consider when using the egg. The first is where to put it. Other than the wire issue, we also had to consider where would offer the most accurate reading. We wanted it to be as close to the cot as we could, whilst still being away from drafts, the window and the radiator so that it wouldn't be giving us a false reading. It's also worth mentioning that there's no substitute for mothers intuition / common sense so it's still worth having a sneaky feel of your baby, to make sure they're not too warm. The thermometer only takes into consideration the temperature of the room, not of the child and so allowances need to be made if your child has a temperature etc. So is it worth the money? Absolutely. It's put my mind at ease and being able to see the colour without going in and disturbing the sleep thief is worth the money alone! We've found it to be reliable, and durable too. We use it on a daily basis and despite taking a few knocks its still working brilliantly. I would definitely recommend it to any parents with small children. Read the complete review |
