What Is a Karibu Baby Seat?
A Karibu Baby Seat is suitable for use with children from 3 months upwards when first learning to sit up, the chair provides all round back support so as to support the baby and prevent them falling backwards or sideways, and a cut out at the front for the legs with a piece between the legs to stop babies sliding downwards and falling out. The baby using the seat will need to be able to take some of their own weight and have decent enough neck strength and some strength around the middle so as to enable them to sit in the chair comfortably.
The Price:-
Prior to our purchase of this seat we had previously seen a very similar seat to this it instantly struck me as a good idea. Seeing that our friends baby around the same age was using this chair well and that it was aiding her in generally being able to just sit up and look around the quest was on to find a cheaper model that would do the same job. It was whilst looking in Asda at one of their baby events we managed to purchase a Karibu Baby Seat for £20. This was a good price as I can see even on Amazon this exact same seat is selling for £29.99 and I have seen recently that the price in Asda has since risen to £25 but will no doubt be on offer again sometime in the future.
What It's Made From:-
The main bulk of the seat is made from a very sturdy, solid, dense foam that still has a little give to add a bit of comfort in with the functionality, with the tray that fits across the front being made of a hard plastic, high chair tray style material. The tray is a little bit of a fiddle to clip on the chair first time round but gets easier with time, as these are the only two pieces that this chair comprises of thier is no chance of small pieces or choke hazards what-so-ever. The chair is very resilient to chewing, pulling and grabbing, but is also soft enough for baby to do all of the above, the chair is also very easy to clean due to all of the surfaces being wipe clean with nothing to stain which is also handy when learning to feed solids.
What uses have we found:-
The main reason we got this chair was because we felt that it was simply a good aid in encouraging our baby to sit up of her own accord and must admit we have been more than satisfied with this intended use. Since using the chair it seems to have encouraged our child to look around more and definitely to try and sit up more on her own although she isn't quite there yet.
The main handy feature of this chair as simple as it is, is the fact that although quite compact the footprint of the chair is the whole circumference of the bottom, meaning it is stable as long as it is placed on a flat surface so can be used pretty much anywhere. This is handy whilst needing to be in the kitchen as baby can be sat on a worktop (within reason) with little fear of her falling off as the weight that the baby adds only makes it more stable. Mealtimes is also handy as when sitting at the table eating I find it much preferable to a bouncy chair as it can be sat on the table so baby can watch as opposed to being sat on the floor looking at our legs.
On the subject of food as previously mentioned this chair is good for weaning as well as the tray tends to catch most of the mess missed by the bib, and also does quite well at catching the bits when little one manages to get hold of her spoon to play with. Both the tray and the seat are wipe clean which means a quick going over with the babywipes and the chair is good for action again.
The wipe clean and waterproof nature of the chair means it can also used in the bath or shower making for a handy platform to place a small child somewhere they will not fall out of and cause themselves any damage. The tray makes for a good surface for toys to keep little ones entertained either in or out of the bath and saves a lot of frustration on babies behalf when it catches toys that little fingers drop that otherwise would have been irretreivable without Mum or Dad's help.
In Conclusion:-
Overall I feel that this is a good product however can only be used for a limited time that the seat can be used for as it can start being used properly at between 3-4 months and is suitable for babies up to 10kg (approx 23lb) so probably around 6-8 months old but not much later than this in my opinon as once a child would be able to pull themselves upright onto their legs from the seat I think there would be a good chance of it tipping, especially once they have got a little bit of weight behind them.
The major advantage of this seat as explained is the ability to keep a young baby close by, aided by the fact that this seat is extremely portable. So overall a great product however the fact that it cannot be used for a longer period is a gripe for me, I know babies grow quick but would like to have thought this could have been used for a bit longer, so I will be deducting one star for this, however at just £20 it is far cheaper than the competing products on the whole still represents good value for money.
4/5 stars from me
