Advantages: sturdy, attractive, safe

Disadvantages: is there enough room beside your bed?

We bought a Brio Bedside Cot before our son was born. It seemed like a nice compromise between having him in our bed, and having him in another cot. He would sleep in his cot, but right next to our bed. I could just roll over to breastfeed in the night, rather than getting out of bed.

The last part was true - I did just breastfeed in bed, because he was right in the bed. But we never ended up using the cot at the bedside - when we placed it beside the bed, it left me no room to get out of bed! Between my bedside table, the cot, and the footboard of the bed, I wouldn't be able to get up in the night to go to the loo, ensuring a bad night for everyone!

And although the wheels lock, I did worry that the gap between our bed and his might grow, and he might get an arm or leg trapped, or worse, slip down into the gap.

So while he was in our bed, the cot stayed in our room, and the cats slept in it.

If you don't have a footboard, or if you can manage without a bedside table, this cot might work for you. A new baby who can be moved in his sleep would also help, so you could move him from your breast to the cot, would also help.

The idea is certainly lovely, and should make sleeping with the baby easier. We ended up moving the baby out of our bed at 3 months, so I could roll over in the night, in peace.

He does use the cot now, it works very well as a standard cot. We could have saved some money by just buying one of those.

I have a friend whose daughter got used to being in bed with her, and I think is still sleeping there, at six. So we were a bit nervous about our baby staying in bed, and moved him out at three months. I've heard it can be done at six months, reasonably easily, but after that, it gets hard.

I had a bad habit og letting our daughter sleep in our bed and then it's hard to get them out.

We pondered on buying one of these when our first child was born but I ended up with a standard cot which has lasted for both my children and still in good use, these sound great but like you say. I would be scared they fell though any gaps which might appear. Nice op :O) Nicola
