Gro-Egg Room Thermometer
Advantages: Easy to read temperature, works great as a nightlight too.
Our flat is quite cold and drafty. In the winter it gets too cold from the lack of double glazing or proper insulation. In the summer, it gets too hot as we have huge windows in the front room which hold the heat all day.
When we were expecting Oscar, I was worried about his room being either too hot or too cold. A baby's room should be between 16 and 20 degrees celsius, with optimum temperature of 18 recommended by the FSID organisation. I got a free wall thermometer in my Bounty pack when I was in hospital which I used for the first couple of months.
When he went in his cot, so was no longer right next to me, I wanted a thermometer that I could see instantly whenever I woke in the night. Someone recommended the Gro Egg.
I bought one from Amazon for £14.46. It came boxed, with a mains plug and user information leaflet. It was quick and very easy to set up. It has a digital view window in the middle, which clearly shows the temperature of the room and either a sad or happy face, depending on the temperature. The whole egg-shaped unit has a yellow backlight, which is light enough to act as a nightlight in a baby's room. If the temperature drops below 16 degrees, the light turns blue and a sad face appears on the viewing window. If it goes between 21 and 24 degrees, the light turns orange. This shows that it is getting warm in the room, but not too warm. If it goes above 24 degrees, the light goes red and a sad face appears again.
It was so helpful for me to have this thermometer when Oscar was tiny. We set our central heating to turn off over night, and occasionally it does drop below 16. If I woke in the night and saw that the thermometer was blue, I could either put an extra blanket on Oscar, or turn the heating on for a bit. If I had just been using a normal thermometer, I wouldn't have known that it was too cold.
Summary: Great looking thermometer and nightlight at a reasonable price.
