Advantages: provides stimulation for babies, helps develop skills, soothing
Disadvantages: expensive, musical tune is too short
My Son sleeps in a cot bed and I purchased a musical cot mobile to provide stimulation and interaction whilst he is lying down, as well as helping him to develop his skills and to occupy him. Musical cot mobiles can encourage baby's hand to eye co-ordination and refine motor skills. They are usually very colourful and the moving toys encourage baby's eyes to focus.
My Son has never been a good sleeper and I am lucky if he has two 30 minute naps a day. I wind up the mobile just before he has a nap, so that he associates the music with 'nap time' and he has a little play which helps tire him out a little before he sleeps.
Humphrey's Corner is a range designed exclusively for Mothercare by Sally Hunter. The Baby Jack and Daisy Musical Cot Mobile is suitable from birth and co-ordinates with the Humphrey's Corner bedding range and costs £29.99. I don't have a particular 'theme' in my Son's room, however I was attracted to the Humphrey's Corner cot musical because of the colours and range of toys hanging from the mobile.
The cot mobile has 5 small toys hanging from the musical box. These are: a bright Yellow Duck, a Blue teddy bear, a Dog, a Cow and hanging from the middle a larger sized toy which is an Elephant wearing a nappy! The cot mobile has a musical wind up mechanism, so doesn't require batteries and the characters gently rotate to the 'Pennies from Heaven' tune. I like the size of the hanging toys on the musical mobile and they have been designed so that they can be removed and given to a child, by cutting the cords.
I only have a few disadvantages about the mobile. The first would be the price. At £29.99 I think it is expensive for what it is. Secondly the 'Pennies from Heaven' tune is very short, so short in fact that it can get a little irritating. I think it would have been better if it played three different tunes in sequence. Thirdly, the music is very loud. Compared to other musical toys for babies, which normally tend to be quiet to protect their hearing, I am surprised that the musical mobile is as loud as it is. I can even hear it from my downstairs lounge! Having said that, I would recommend Humphrey's Corner Baby Jack and Daisy Musical Cot Mobile as it is a great tool for associating my Son with 'nap time'.

- 29/09/09 You could say my son slept like a baby when he was young, it's only now at 18 years old he doesn't seem to. I rather like the sound of this mobile , apart from the price that is. x |

- 27/04/09 Great review. Yes the music starts to annoy me after a while. My Grandson has this one. |

- 19/04/09 your son sounds like mine, doesn't want to sleep! we drove for 2 hours this afternoon and he had a 10 minute nap - first and only all day since 5.30 this morning. he has just now (10.35pm) gone off to sleep but will wake 4-7 times before the morning... we had to take our mobile down a few months ago as he realised that if he stood up and stretched he could grab a toy, pull the mobile slightly then let it go shooting the soft toys off their hooks and across the room! |
