Ikea Mammut Children's Table
Advantages: Good value for money, sturdy, nice color
Disadvantages: Bigger than it seems in the shop
My little boy has always enjoyed arts and crafts. But after trying to make easter cards with him sitting at our dining table, he was too short to be able to see what he was doing properly and had to constantly reach over to get things. I tried putting him on a cushion on the chair and it was a disaster and resulted in him nearly going head first through our big glass balcony door. I realised he needed something a little more his own size.
On a trip to Ikea I noticed the Mammut children's table, I'm not normally a big fan of Ikea furniture, and was only there while my mum picked up a wardrobe, but I liked the design of it and it seemed very sturdy and looked like it would be pretty easy to assemble, so I thought it would be perfect for him. It was a little pricey at just under 25 pounds but children's furniture in general seems to be pretty expensive, so for a children's table was around the same prices as others I'd seen. As I said the first thing that attracted me to it was the design, having another young baby at the time and with my son being quite accident prone I liked the idea of there being no corners, corners are frightening when you have little children. It's also a wonderful color, the blue is very vibrant, I'm not normally a fan of blue but I like this blue and it fit lovely with the color scheme in my son's bedroom.
When I got it home it was very easy to assemble, the box it came in had been misleadingly heavy and in actual fact the table itself was very light. Which is good for me being able to move it around easily from Will's room into the living room, but it also means Will can pick it up and has knocked it over a few times, sometimes while it's had a drink or a paint pot on. Thank goodness for wooden floors!
The legs of the table come off easily which is very handy as it means I can put it away in my room when not in use. Although not so easily that they've ever fallen off, or even become wobbly, the table is very sturdy and Will tends to lean on it if he gets bored of drawing.
I've found the table to be pretty durable, it's been painted, drawn and spilled on and there isn't a mark on it, Will even tried drawing on it with a Biro and it didn't scratch. It wipes clean easily with a bit of soapy water.
My only real negative is that once you add to it the Mammut chairs it takes up a hell of a lot of room. Even though I have quite a large living room it still seems to get in the way, particularly with being round as it can't be pushed up against the wall or into a corner. I didn't realize until I had it set up in my living room just how much so, as the Ikea displays are bigger than they look with minimal clutter.
All in all I'm happy with this purchase, it seems like it will last me a long time as Will is nowhere near outgrowing it and it's a great place for him to sit and draw, paint or even just sit and eat his dinner.
