When our youngest little boy hit 18 months he decided that highchairs were for losers. It wasn't so much that he had outgrown it - he fit in it perfectly. It was more that he hated being restrained and as soon as we'd got him in it his arms would be in the air and he'd be shouting "out!" Up until that point we would sit at the dining table for meals, with our 4 year old on a booster seat and our little one in the highchair. We decided it would be nice for them to have their own little table and chairs at their own height, especially for lunch and breakfast when we don't all eat at the same time.
We decided that we wanted a wooden table and chairs set rather than a plastic one as it would be going in our living room and we wanted something that would still look nice. We also wanted one that would be easy to clean and wipe down as it would be used at meal times but also for colouring, playdough, craft time etc.
We had a look at the usual places, Ikea, Mothercare etc and didn't find anything very inspiring. Whilst dragging my husband round the Trafford Centre we decided to take a look in John Lewis, where we found this little beauty, and three of his little friends. There was a round table, and 4 chairs displayed, this yellow teddy bear, a green frog, blue cat and a red mouse. I loved them immediately so twisted hubby's arm and persuaded him to agree to buy the teddy and frog chairs and the table.
One thing that's worth noting about the chairs (and indeed the table) is they're not just made by John Lewis. They're made by John Crane. John Lewis don't seem to advertise this fact and I personally think they absolutely should! We've bought a few John Crane wooden toys in the past and while they haven't been cheap, they have been excellent quality and most importantly durable. I've had a quick nosy on the John Lewis website and half way down the product description it states that the designer is John Crane but if I were them, I'd put it in the title but he does make some gorgeous children's items.
The chairs were £29 each, so they're certainly not the cheapest chairs out there. I think in Ikea you could get the table and two chairs for the price of just one of these but we decided that they would last us and we would rather pay a bit extra for something good quality. Plus they were cuter!
They came flat packed but it didn't take much to put them together - you basically just need to screw the legs on and voila! And they really do look lovely when assembled. The yellow on this chair (as with the green on the frog one) is a bright, vivid colour and really eye catching.
They are made of rubber wood so are very durable. They have been knocked about it since we bought them and they still look like new. No chips or marks or anything. Which is remarkable considering how rough and tumble our two little boys can be at times. Both the table and the chairs are easy to clean. I basically just grab a Dettol wipe, give it a quick wipe down and its back to its original beauty again. Which is great considering the amount of mess my boys can make in a short amount of time!
The chairs are 27cm high so a great height for children. My 4 year old can climb on and off with ease while my now 22 month old, can climb on and off but his feet are just slightly off the ground. Saying that he is a little titch (still in 12-18 months clothes!) so I think you're average sized toddler would be able to sit on it no problem. According to the John Lewis they are suitable from 2 years of age but my little one has been fine and I think most his age would be as long as you apply little bit of common sense.
Both of my boys love their chairs, and thankfully there are no arguments over which belongs to whom! My youngest chose the teddy and my eldest chose the frog. They are both pretty unisex so would come in handy if we ever had another baby.
So to conclude, they're certainly not the cheapest chairs on the market, BUT they are durable, good quality and more eye catching that a basic plain wooden table.
John Lewis is a lovely store and has so many good quality baby and toddler items. We bought most of our new baby products in their before we had our first child and we continue to buy items in there from time to time.
One of the best products we have bought from there is this teddy bear chair for our little girl. I think kids love something that is just for them and this chair is perfect as its just her size and a chair intended just for her which looks like an adult chair and so makes her feel grown up and like a big girl, something she loves.
The chair is made of a lovely rubber wood so it is stylish looking and also very strong and robust. I much prefer a wooden chair to a cheap plastic looking chair as it looks so much nicer and will last longer than a plastic chair. We looked at this as an investment piece, one my little girl will use for a long time and then possibly my little boy can use it too. I also doesn't look out o place in our house like I think a plastic chair would.
The seat is just the wood colour but the rest of the chair is a nice cheerful yellow colour. The back of the chair is where you will find the teddy bears face and in fact the back is he whole shape of its head so it looks really cute. The teddy bear has a nice smile on his face and looks cute.
The chair has wooden legs that screw into the base of the chair. These were easy to assemble as the chair came flat packed when we got it. Sometimes you will find the chair becomes a bit wobbly but this is only because one of the legs has become a little unscrewed so all you need to do is just twist it back in.
My little girl loves sitting in this chair and will often choose to sit on this rather than come up on the couch. It measures 27cm so her feet touch the ground and is the perfect size for her.
It cost us £29 in John Lewis and its been a big hit in our house.
John Lewis Child Teddy Bear Chair
We were wanting some child-friendly chairs for a small wooden children's table we had been given, though we wanted the chairs to be more sturdy than children's plastic chairs. We had hunted around and seen a few which matched our needs though a lot of them seemed very expensive for a simple chair, and many were rather boring. By chance, we had popped into a charity shop to donate a few items and saw two of these chairs with a wooden table on sale for £5.00 each chair - a bargain considering John Lewis had them at £25.00 at the time. We did not need the table, though luckily they allowed us to purchase both chairs without it for a grand price of £10 rather that £50 - a great saving, and even though they were second hand, they were as good as new.
As we bought these from a charity shop, they were already made, though a friend had bought the same chairs not long before we had and they had come flat-packed. When I asked my friend how easy they were to put together as I was not there at the time, she told me that they were extremely easy and she had not even had to ask her other half to help which is a first!!
Once built, the chairs are very sturdy and even hold an adults weight, (though it is not too comfortable for an adult to sit in it due to seat size!). The seating area is a wooden plain varnished effect with the back of the chair shaped like a teddy in yellow and white with a black face (eyes, nose, mouth). There are four sturdy legs which come out at a slight angle in yellow also. There are other chairs in this range with a range of different animals and colours.
I would probably recommend this seat for a child from the age of 18 months/2 years up to perhaps five or six depending on childs size.
For the top £25.00 price, I think that the seat could have had more to it that what it is, such as more decoration or a different shape, though for the price I grabbed it at, I would fully recommend it. I am personally very pleased with these chairs and my youngster adores them and loves sitting at her table alongside her friends.
We're lucky that our house has got very big bedrooms, it means I've been able to make mine into a kind of bedsit for when I want time away from the family and my 3 year old sister has got a wicked bedroom which doubles up as a playroom. Obviously my mum and dad and 11 year old sister have got their bedrooms sorted good too, but I don't go in them rooms all that often so can't find much of theirs to review!
My sister has got 2 of these John Lewis Teddy Bear Chairs in her bedroom, we got her the 2 because our cousin who is about the same age comes to play quite a bit and it's lovely to watch them sitting on identical chairs and watching tv or whatever. The chairs are absolutely gorgeous, a bit pricey for a kids chair at £25.00 each but they are brill quality and would look wicked in any child's bedroom.
The chairs come flat packed but when we brought ours I helped my dad put them together, actually he did the first and I copied him with the second so I pretty much put it together myself apart from getting him to make sure all the joints were tight and stuff. They were VERY easy to fix together and the end result was a stable and good looking chair.
These Teddy Bear Chairs are suitable for kids from 2 years, obviously it will depend on the individual child's height and how well they are able to sit on their own but looking at it now I reckon 2 years would be about right. The height of the seat is only 27cm so they are very small chairs, my sister is 3 and she sits nice on them but to be honest she can also sit comfortable on higher chairs so I don't know how much longer she'll be using these for.
The chairs only come in the one colour, the seat is rubberwood and has just been varnished and the legs and back of the chair (the teddy's head) is yellow. Other colours ARE available at John Lewis but they feature different animals like a green frog, red cat and blue mouse. All the chairs look great but the teddy bear face is the cutest and it's a bit of a shame that you can't choose what colour you have it in. The yellow is nice and bright anyway so it doesn't matter all that much, and yellow is one of them colours that will go with most colour decoration in a room so it's well thought out.
The legs are stable and the chair doesn't rock, I've caught my sister standing up on it and it has never fallen over or started rocking. Obviously I make her get off it as soon as I see her standing on but at least I can tell you that it's stable enough to take the weight of a 3 year old even standing up so will definitely hold most young children sitting down!
The seat is just flat and even though it's smooth I was quite surprised to see that it hadn't got any indent for the child's bottom. My sister looks comfortable sitting on it anyway but a bit of shaping would have been nice I think especially for the price of the chair.
My son has just turned 18 months old, and about a month ago started to want to sit on proper chairs, we decided we should look for a suitable child for him. We didn't want to spend much money but the chair needed to be of good quality since he is quite strong and like to stand on things!
We also didn't want to buy a chair and table set, since that would clutter up our lounge which is already full. The Bear Chair was ideal because it's made of rubberwood, and is well constructed, even when put together by us.
It was very easy to assemble as the legs only required screwing into the base, and the same with the back rest.
The chair comes in yellow for the bear chair, but there are alternatives (a blue cat, a red rabbit, and a green frog). There is also a table (£39) and a toy box (£54) in the same range. You can either have matching chairs or mix and match the animals.
My son loves this chair; he finds it very easy to get on and off as there aren't any handles. And now he can sit and draw at a low table (our coffee table) just like at nursery!
At £19.50 it's definitely not the cheapest chair we could have bought but hopefully it will last a good few years.
