My little girl is growing up and a year ago she made the move from her cot into her toddler bed. While we were looking around for possibilities we came across this on Amazon and it had been reduced to an amazing £100 from its usual retail of around £250 and as we have had good experiences with little tikes we decided this was the one.
Setting the bed up
It come flat packed at it does need assembled which requires some tools and does take around half an hour as it can be rather fiddly. There are instructions in the pack but it is easy to do them without them as you can see easily what needs to go where and it is just a case of attaching the bolts and screws to make it safe. Then you lay the panels underneath the mattress base and put the mattress on and you're ready to go.
The mattress required for this bed is actually a cot bed mattress as it is a toddler bed and although it looks rather large it is intended for children 3 -5 years of age. The pieces can be hard to slot together so me and hubby had to work together while putting this together and I would suggest having 2 people present when building it as it is rather fiddly for 1 person alone to do as the pieces need held in place while they are being tightened up.
From first appearances you can tell the bed is extremely well made each panel of the base and window are made of strong durable plastic they are very thick pieces that will ensure the bed is very durable. One the screws are all in there is no movement at all to the bed and it all sits stable. The bed slates are also a good size meaning they are very strong and can hold the mattress and weight of the child with ease.
The bed itself
Once the bed is made it is designed to resemble a cottage the panels around the bed base are white and shaped in the appearance of fence panels. Then the head board is a built up piece of plastic that is shaped as a window and even has opening shutters where you can store books although my little girl prefers to keep her dolly in there then takes her out for bedtime.
The shutters open and close easily on the shutters ad they are slow moving so there is no chance of little one getting their fingers caught and this is an excellent feature of the bed it is simple yet engaging for little one and makes bed time a little more interesting without over stimulating them just before going to sleep. It is a good size meaning books can easily fit in there and it can even fit dollies and teddies in too
The bed looks very pretty it has love hearts in the fence panels and as it is pink, white and purple it really makes a little girls room look very pretty. The plastic is large and bulky and I was worried as undressed it does look a little plastically but once it has it bed dressings on it this is toned down a lot and it just looks nice and attractive.
It is a good size although the mattress is the same size as a cot bed I was worried it would become lost inside the huge frame of the bed but it actually works very well indeed and the size of the bed is perfect for my 3 year old although she did sleep in it from the age of 2. It will easily last her another few years and although the age recommendation is 3 years to 4 years you can stretch that a little and I believe it will be used from about 2 years to 5 years easily as there is plenty of room and of course well made enough to last.
All the details on the bed are subtle yet make the whole appearance of the bed shine through it looks very pretty while also being practical and really is great for adding something a little bit different to other toddler beds I have seen.
The mattress you receive with the bed is not the best quality it is thick and works well enough but you would have thought for the price little tikes are asking for this bed because it has a mattress provided with it you could get the best of the best but actually it is just an ok mattress.
One of the things I like about this bed is although it is large in size very well made and gives little one that feeling of being in a big persons bed it is extremely low to the floor so it can b used from an early age and there is no worry if they fall out the bed as I is very low sitting. It looks lovely in a room while being practical and although it is rather bulky it does not over take the room even though my little girl's room is the smallest in the house.
My little girl adores her bed and she thinks everything about it is fantastic she loves having her big girl's bed and loves that she can store her teddies and books on her very own windowsill. She loves going to bed at night now and it really does make bed time more appealing. My little girl has used this for the last year and the novelty does not seem to have worn off with her and although it is a simple design it seems it is engaging enough for her.
We have had this bed for just over a year so far and we have never had any problems the bed slats have lasted well, the doors on the widow have always worked well and as it is made of plastic you can easily just wipe it down and it comes up as good as new.
There are a couple of negatives but nothing major my first is the book shelf that is the window has no back meaning you have to balance them in there. Although my little girl has got used to putting things in there it would have been nice if there was a back to the window so they could sit up against it as many of times the books or toy falls straight through the back.
Also as it is made of thick plastic this means the bed frame itself is rather hard yes this is the same with all beds and a metal one could be just as ad but my little girl has hit her leg of the plastic a few times and it does hurt. The main reason she manages to do this is because the plastic frame is really bulky so although it is good for making it durable it also can be a restriction.
Finally the price at anything between £250 and £300 this is a major expense for a toddler bed that will only last a few years at the most. We were lucky to get it at such a small price but I have never seen it at that price again and you can pick them up second hand and just buy a new mattress but these sell at over £100 on eBay second hand. I understand you get a mattress with it and most toddler beds they need to be purchased separately but you could pick up the same quality mattress for around £50 making the bed frame itself still at over £200.
We love this bed and we will be able to get more use out of it as when my eldest girl grows out of it my expected baby will just be big enough to go in her own bed. It is amazingly pretty and sets a little girl's room off perfectly it is a little different to everything else on the market and all the small details make it really appealing to children.
It lasts well and with all little tikes products the re sell value is great so even after you have had your use out of it you can regain some of the money back and the bed is that durable there would be no problem at all getting a buyer.
I would recommend this bed to anyone for a first big girls bed for your little girl just a shame the price is so high or it would have got full marks from me.
