      an ammazing bed that makes cot to bed transition a doddle!!

      * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ Introduction ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

      My eldest was 5 on Sunday and he has had this bed since he was nearly 2 years old, so 3 years total. He was very quick with walking and pulling himself up and his cot was something my mum brought us as a gift but it didnt have the removable sides to change the bed into a toddler bed. When my eldest was 1.5 years we started to look for toddler beds, i wanted something fun that he would enjoy sleeping in, so preferably something a little different than a normal toddler bed. I had the hope of the bed being more exciting, and there for keeping him in it!. He didnt have any character interests at the time which made it even harder as there are many character beds around which look very fun and cute. Just before Christmas 2010 i spotted this bed online, with some online codes I had I managed to get the bed for a very reasonable (I think) £150.00, this did include a mattress so i felt the price was very reasonable considering a mattress can cost anywhere over 80.00. The bed is now selling in Argos £275.00 which i personally feel is too much for a child's bed, as they will only get a few years use from it before moving into a single bed.

      * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ What's in the box? ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

      In the box you get 4 parts of the bed (front, back and 2 sides), these obviously need to be assembled together but you will also receive instructions to help with this. Along side the 4 parts of the bed, you will also receive:

      *wood base for the mattress to go on
      *4 x wheels
      *4 x stickers for the wheels
      *fixings

      * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ The Bed ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

      As you can see from the picture the bed is in the shape of a racing car, in a lovely blue colour (you can also get it in red which I believe is now the only colour you can buy it in). It has 4 black wheels with white rims. The bonnet of the car dips down at the front which makes it slightly easier if your child wants to climb in that way (my son does anyway!). The bed is very realistic for a small child as it even has the indents at the front where the headlights would be, there are even 2 exhausts at the back!

      The bed is recommended from age 18 months up to 5 years and is classed as a toddler bed (so smaller than a single). The measurements are as follows: L67 X W40, the wood base is L51 X W26 (this is the required size of the mattress you will need). There is still a little gap either side of the mattress to allow for tucking the duvet in. Its very low down to the floor at 13inches at the lowest point so Harvey had no trouble climbing in with no help at all needed, even at 2 years old.

      The mattress is white and passes all of the safety requirements, it has a sticker to confirm this, as well as washing and care instructions label. The mattress is slighter firmer than a normal mattress but we were advised it was better for a child's back as it also provides support. The mattress has a waterproof topping so is easily cleanable should your child have any accidents.

      * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ Assembly ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

      The bed was pretty easy to assemble, this is coming from someone who doesn't build or put anything together....ever! You simply click the 4 parts of the bed together then attach the wheels and lay the wood base down, my fiancé was at work when the bed arrived and I wanted to have it done before he got in from work, so I decided to have a go myself. I started by laying the left side down, I then attached the front which just clicks into place, then the right hand side then the back, with all the fittings in place I then just had to lay the wood down. It is very thick and strong to support a mattress and a child's weight. In all it took me roughly 20mins, which i didnt feel was too bad considering the only thing i had ever built was a small flat pack from Argos.

      I then had to click the 4 wheels into place and stick the stickers onto the wheels, stupidly I decided to put the wheels on first, but what I really should have done was put the stickers onto the wheels and then put the wheels on the bed.

      * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ What did Harvey think? ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

      His first word when he saw the bed was wow! Because we got the bed near christmas we made out that santa had delivered it early and that it was an extra special gift to try and help with the cot to bed transition and also that he simply wouldn't fit it onto his sleigh with everything else he would need to deliver. It worked as the first night of sleeping in it he tried to avoid having his normal bath before bed just so that he could get into his new cool bed ASAP!

      Harvey loves the bed and we have not had any trouble at all with him getting in or out, due to the shape of the beds at the sides we have not had the need to add safety guards at the sides, because of the dip, then it goes slightly higher again, that works as a slight bed guard, so even from as little as 2 Harvey has not once fallen out of his bed. He looks perfectly safe while asleep.

      The mattress is fairly comfortable when pressing my hand onto it, and Harvey has never complained about a bad nights sleep. He loves that he has a 'big boy bed' and I feel it has really aided his confidence. When the bed arrived, looking at it I thought he would need help getting in and out of it as well as the bed guard, but the fact he has had none of these is a real bonus for him. Being 2 when he receive the bed, he didn't have a huge range of vocabulary, but he would spend a good 15 mins climbing in and out of his bed shouting 'look mummy!'. He looked so pleased with himself.

      Harvey is forever bounching up and down on it (no good for the mattress mind you) but the bed is not affected in any way, shape or form by the bouncing. It still looks brand new after 3 years.

      * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ Our Thoughts ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ * ~ *

      While my son was an early starter and always eager to try new things, I still panicked about him not being happy in a 'big boys bed' but the transition was made a breeze with this bed. Its low down to the floor which makes it easier, hes quite short for his age but still managed to climb in and out himself from the very first night of using it, which not only made my life easier and less to worry about, but it also made Harvey very happy that he could something himself without mummy's help.

      Before buying the bed we went to view a few and all were either character beds which did not feel very sturdy (on 4 plastic legs) or just plain wood toddler beds. We nearly resorted to buying a single bed as found a few nicer designs but when he tried them out he seemed to small for them, which we felt might have put him off and scared him, as we would have also had to add 2 bed guards, maybe making him feel a little trapped, he also likes his own independence.

      I cannot explain how well built and durable the bed is, its made from extremely strong and robust plastic, if you look at most other character beds (mickey mouse, cars etc) while they are made from the same sort of material as this bed they are on 4 legs, which to me personally didnt make me feel very safe, my little boy loves to jump around on his bed and didnt want something that could break. Saying that my friends little girl has the toddler minnie mouse version i have just mentioned and hers is still fine, but i know Harvey is quite boisterous and heavy handed and always bouncing around doing something. I have climbed into this bed with Harvey many times to read him a book or keep him company if he cannot sleep and it is still all in one piece.

      Growing up, most of my larger items such as garden play centre, dolls house, play kitchen etc was all Made by Little Tykes, my mum kept them for my 2 sisters when i grew out of them and everyone knows Little Tykes to be well made, strong durable, top quality products and that was what i wanted for my sons bed.

      Thankfully Harvey has never had a problem with bed wetting, but does sometimes like to have a glass of drink with him, which has sometimes been spilt on the bed, but as the mattress has the wipe-able material it is very easy to clean.

      I now have a just turned 2 year old who has a white Babies R Us cot/bed with so the sides can be removed. But hes quite behind what his brother was at that age so we have left the sides on, i do think he would like the sides off tho as hes forever climbing into his brothers car bed while his brother is at school to read a book......if thats because he misses him or just likes the bed i dont know, its lovely either way.

      The only negative i have with this bed is that Harvey has also knocked his legs a few times when jumping into the bed (now glad i went for this bed over the others as this was the reason i got it), hes caught his legs on the sides and the bonnet a few times which has actually bruised his legs, again not a fault of the bed, but his for being so accident prone. Again, just wanted to mention it as its something you could maybe try and avoid?

      Overall i am overjoyed with my purchase. My little boy is 5 and still fits in it just fine, and will last 1 more year. I would keep it for my youngest but as his bed is wooden and i like things to match im going to buy my eldest a single white wooden bed to match his brothers. Top quality bed and well worth the money. I have seen the beds sell 2nd hand on ebay for around £50.00 which i personally feel is an absolute bargain!

        Advantages

        Disadvantages

        Fun and good quality

        Well before I had children I always wanted one of these if I had a son, they have been around for years and I think they look great. I never purchased a cot bed and went just for a normal cot for our first as we knew we wanted two children close together but didn't want to fork out for two cots. For this reason my son had to be out of his cot at 17 months so he had time to get used to a bed before his little sister arrived and stole the cot.

        Like all Little Tikes products it is very well made, it is a big chunk plastic car shaped bed. It has 4 wheels which are stationary so they look realistic but don't move. It has moulded shaped for the lights and other parts. It comes in blue and red and also comes with a mattress.

        It takes a cot bed size mattress so if you ever needed to replace it then it is easy to come across. My son took to it very well and slept perfectly in it the first night. It is great because the sides are ever so slightly raised so your child wouldn't easily fall out.

        The base is made from slats like most beds and seems sturdy and strong. We only have very small rooms for the children and this is quite wide compared to a normal toddler bed so it does take up a bit more width due to its design.

        It is a brilliant bed, but it is expensive to buy new. Well worth trying to find second hand and buying a new mattress. My son is relatively tall for his age but this still looks like it will last him for a good couple of years still so it will have good use. I also believe they have a good re-sale value. My only negative is that it can be easily marked, it already has a few surfaces scratches, but overall I am very happy with it. It makes bedtime fun for a young toddler and looks great in a boys bedroom. I have always liked Little Tikes products and this one doesn't disappoint.

        Jess our girl racer.

        Last year we took the girls to toys r us before christmas and we had a good look around Jess spotted the little tikes roadster bed on display and wanted it try explaining to Jess why she can have a boys bed just does not go down well. My husband decided if she wants a boys bed then why not. We left toys r us with the bed costing £189 including the mattress not so bad i guess some mattresses cost that without the bed.
        Lucky the bed comes in three colours blue, red and bright yellow so i made it on the condition she choose the yellow car bed.

        The bed comes in a huge box that felt quite light.
        When taking the parts out the box it was in three parts. It was easy to build and included the key tool and easy to read instructions it took around 20 minutes to build up. The bed has wooden slats and the mattress is not bigger than a cot bed mattress and fits on top of the slats.
        The material of the bed is the same tough durable plastic that the little tikes toys are made from. The wheels and front of the bed all have the little tikes badge on it. The mattress sits low down on the bed so the sides of the car acts as a safety bed guard so no chance of her falling out. The bed can be used from 18 months until 5 years of age. The wheels are just decoration and moulded on the the car they don't turn round.

        Jess now loves bedtime and enjoys sleeping in her car bed, we now have bright yellow fifi the flower tot bedding on to match the cars so actually looks nice and girly now.
        I am happy that we have got the bed and will last her until she is 5 so a good few years yet.
        I definitely recommend the bed for children transferring from the cot to a bed it is ideal low to the floor and the sides as bed rails.
        I highly recommend this super cool roadster car for every little boy/girl racer.

          Will I be buying another for son number 3?

          When I was expecting my second child we needed to move my eldest boy out of the nursey and into his own room to make way for the new baby. He was 18 months old at the time and we decided to give him a proper boys room. Maybe this was more for us than him because at 18 months I don't think he was too bothered how his room looked. Anyway one of the things we really wanted was a car bed.

          We looked around for a while but didn't see anything we liked, then I came across the Little Tikes Roadster Bed in the Woolworths catalogue. It was £200 and we ordered it straight away.

          When it arrived the bed did need to be assembled. You get the mattress and a wooden base. The actual car comes in four parts which just click together and the wheels come seperate which need attaching. I put the car bed together myself so it can't be that difficult to do.

          The mattress size is the same as a cotbed, so it is perfect for little kids, a big bed without actually being a big bed. It is suitable from 18 months and thats when my son got his, he has never fallen out of his bed.

          The only complaint I have about the bed is that the wooden frame that supports the mattress is pretty cheap, my husband has had to repair ours a few times, usually when the kids jump on the bed.

          My son is now five so he is just about ready for a new bed but he's used it for three and a half years and it is still in really good condition. Appearance wise the bed looks as good as when we first bought it.

          We loved the bed that much that when I had my third baby and my second son had to move out of the nursery we bought him the same bed. It was a bit more difficult to get hold of though because Little Tikes had replaced the blue bed for a red one. Eventually we tracked down somewhere online that sold the blue bed and we bought it for about the same price.

          I really think the Little Tikes Roadster Bed is perfect for any toddler moving out of a cot. They are smaller and safer than buying them a big bed. They also look great in a car themed room, perfect!

            Advantages

            Disadvantages

            quite expensive, especially if having to buy mattress to go with

            We were very kindly given the little tykes cosy cottage bed for my daughter by somebody on the freecycle network, as we needed her cotbed for her new baby brother, and at 2.5 years old she was ready for a big girls bed. This is a true little girls bed, it is basically shaped like a cottage at the head, with a blue roof, pink walls and a little hidey window with fully functioning shutters. The sides and bottom of the bed are basically like a garden fence/gate. It has wooden slats and takes a standard cot bed mattress. Being from little tikes it is durable solid plastic, very easy to wipe clean should someone attack it with crayons or something! My daughter now adores her big girls bed and was happy to pass on her cot to her new brother, and best of all this will last her until she's at least 5 years old, or until she decides she's "too big" for it, then we'll be able to pass it on to someone else i hope. They also do differnt styles, such as the racing car and thomas the tank engine, so theres one to suit all tastes!

              Advantages

              Disadvantages

              Not exactly a cot bed but smaller than a normal sized single bed. This bed is plastic and shaped as a car [roadster to be precise]. It is bright blue and comes with four wheels, slight bonnet and twin exhausts. It has a wooden slatted base which gives plenty of out of the way storage room for those little bits and pieces. It stands about eight inches off the ground and is slightly bigger than standard cot bed size. It takes cot bed sheets, quilt etc and has its own mattress provided. My son moved into this bed when he was thirteen months old and has only ever rolled out of it twice when he turned himself round and kept rolling over. I assure you he wasn't hurt and didn't even wake up the second time round. It makes an ideal bed as it doesn't take up masses of room and he can use it till he's five [or thereabouts]. By this time he can progress to the full sized roadster or if his Dad has his way the Ferrarri!
