Advantages: Lovely design.
Disadvantages: Expensive if bought new.
The 'Roundabout' nursery décor range at Mama's & Papa's is a funky, modern range, available in pink (with the main characters being 2 bunnies) for girls, & blue (with the main characters being 2 dogs) for boys. The name Roundabout comes from the fact that the theme is around cars & road signs, not a merry-go-round which is the obvious thought!
I was in two minds as to whether or not to buy a Moses basket. The government guidelines state that babies should be allowed to sleep in their parents room until 6 months old in order to reduce the cot death risks, but most parents I talked to said that either the Moses basket was a waste of money as they are too small for baby to sleep in for more than a few weeks, or that they'd moved baby into the cot within a few weeks anyway since they seemed happier there.
But, since I figured this will be the only baby I have, I decided to splash out on one anyway. I had already decided I was going to decorate the nursery in the Roundabout range, but was VERY unsure about paying the £95 price tag for the matching moses basket, especially since it probably wasn't going to see much service...
Instead I decided to have a look on eBay for a second-hand one. I found one for half the price, & it came with a BRAND NEW, SEALED mattress! This was perfect. I had planned on buying a new mattress if I bought one second-hand as guidelines are that babies should always have new mattresses. In addition, the mattress turned out to be the 'deluxe' version, so was better than if I'd bought the basket new!
The basket is made of maize, with 2 carry handles & an adjustable hood. There are 2 sections of fabric - one which covers the basket itself & features 'dangly' road-sign details & one section for the hood which is held in place by plastic strips which screw onto the basket. A small dangly felt toy hangs from the hood with Velcro. There is also a small quilt which is beautifully, yet simply, adorned with the Roundabout characters.
The overall size is approx. 85cm x 45cm. This is a standard size which will fit most Moses basket stands.
I absolutely love this basket - it's the nicest one I've seen (in my opinion!). Having said that, I still wouldn't have paid £95 for it! I've had quite a bit of use out of it too, more than I expected to. My son slept in it for about the first 7 weeks (we got fed up of listening to his wittering & moved him into the nursery - we felt quite safe with this since we had the Angelcare monitor with movement sensor (see my review))! However, he has napped in this every day, & still does even at 4 months old (he's getting a bit big for it now but it's fine for naps). I'm not looking forward to selling this basket - it's so cute & to me epitomises him as a newborn...perhaps I'll just have to keep it!

- 02/07/09 I loved my moses basket and I found it essential in both of my sons first few months. My youngest is nearly eight, and its the only baby item that I've still got it in the attic, I can't contemplate getting rid of it! Lovely review xx |
