Mothercare Moses Basket Pine Stand
Advantages: well built, safe, sturdy
Disadvantages: a bit too low
When I was expecting my twin sons, I was given two moses baskets by a relative, but only one stand, so off we went to Mothercare to buy an inexpensive stand. This fit the bill perfectly well. The construction is solid and the materials are of top quality, and I felt very confident that it wouldn't collapse or break under the weight of basket plus baby. The plastic at the ends of the stand means that the basket is held quite securely. It is the easiest thing in the world to put up, and folds away quite compactly for easy storage under a bed or behind a door. While it may not be the most attractive stand on the market, this hardly mattered to us as we would only be using it for a very short while (babies out grow things so fast!)
I found the height to be a little lower than I would have liked. I understand that this is most likely for safety reasons, should your little bundle of joy suddenly jump several developmental stages and roll or jump out of the basket, but anyone who has tried to put down a sleeping baby will know that anything lower than waist height (which this stand is) feels like you're bending down about 500 miles, all the while willing the sleeping baby not to wake up! It was, however, the perfect height to put beside our bed for nighttime checks while our sons were still sharing our room. This is where the combination of stand plus basket really came into its own - if you have a small bedroom, or twins or triplets, fitting a full sized cot into your room for the first few months might be impossible. A moses basket and stand is certainly helpful in this scenario.
However, another downside of the height meant that it was nowhere near tall enough to dissuade our two cats from leaping into the baskets. We used cat nets on the baskets, but these were of little use, and we were constantly chasing the cats out of the baskets. To be honest, if we had simply but the baskets on the floor (which we didn't do because of drafts etc.), the cats would have had a peep inside, seen a sleeping bundle, and moved on. In the end, I got so fed up of washing cat hair out of baby sheets that I gave up using the baskets and stands altogether. For the short time we used them for, I felt that they were of limited use, and had I paid full price for two stands, I would have felt they were poor value for money. I would suggest you realistically weigh up why you might need a stand before committing to buying one - I know it seems like an essential baby purchase, but in practise, there are other alternatives which might give you better value, such as using a cot for bedtime and a bouncer for naps. If you are set on getting a stand though, this one is as good as any other, and you can feel confident that it is safe for your new baby.
Summary: A great stand as far as stands go, but the whole concept seems unnecessary
