“ Brand: Wilkinson / Type: Toy Box „
Having gone a little overboard with purchasing toys lately, our understairs cupboard had become rather rammed and highly inconvenient when you actually wanted to access anything (ok so this may be just a little bit of an excuse as to why I can't hoover regularly, but I'm sticking to it!). We decided that the time had come to purchase a more suitable storage solution and set about searching the web for the answer to our problem.
I had no idea that a simple, affordable good old-fashioned toy box was going to prove so hard to come by! I kept coming across wooden varieties that, whilst lovely, were really out of our price range. We just needed something basic with storage the main function - whilst Thomas the Tank Engine or Peppa Pig would be more attractive in the nursery, appearance wasn't particularly high up on our checklist of qualities and we certainly didn't want to pay for this.
Eventually, I came across this Toy Chest on the Wilkinson's website. It met all our requirements easily and was at a price that we were willing to pay. It has a simple, basic design, being cream in colour with the word 'TOYS' printed in red on the side and red dots on the lid. We felt that this meant that it was suitable for either sex, which is a bonus. There are handles cut out on two opposite sides for ease of movement. This toy chest is available in small and large sizes - small being 44cmx44cmx43cm and large 52cmx52cmx50.5cm. Both are currently on sale at discounted prices - £15 for the small box and £20 for the large. I was unsure if these were just available online or in store too, so I went to my local Wilkinson's and was pleased to find them in stock there (packed flat for easy transportation to the car!).
I purchased the small box as this size was sufficient for our needs. It was quite heavy to carry, so I was a little apprehensive at first with how easy the box would be to move once made up - however my worries were soon dispelled once I had made it up. It was really simple to make up, literally popping the sides out and placing the bottom in. It felt sturdy and secure. The box appears to be made with quite a thin wood and covered with a cream faux leather. This is surprisingly strong and robust for such a thin-walled box. The stitching also looks pretty good quality too, sometimes the finishing of these products can give away the price, but not here. Cream would probably not have been our first choice of colour as grubby hands can make this show the dirt easily, but the box cleans up really well with just a damp cloth (I usually use an antibacterial wipe too to get rid of any germs).
The box is a nice size for us and can fit alot in it - jigsaws, books and toys all fit neatly in here. It has also worn pretty well - the faux leather has shown a few signs of scuffing, but this just gives it a 'worn in' look and doesn't seem to detract from the overall appearance.
I'm really pleased with our budget storage solution, and even more pleased that we now have toys neatly hidden away and our understairs cupboard back!
