There's no questioning that Excel is one very powerful spreadsheet package: the sheer number of features and tools would keep the most dedicated mathematician happy for months. However, it is not without many faults from the 'average' user's point of view.

Although you can do pretty much anything with it, it's not always that easy to figure out exactly *how*. The help system isn't much use either. Producing anything but the simplest graphs is also quite difficult. For this price, you might hope that doing the basics could be straightforward.

To summarise, Excel is a superb package, but be prepared to spend a lot of time figuring it out.
