This was one of the main reasons I eventually opted for a mac over a pc. I was worried at first that macs wouldn't offer the compatibility that a pc would. But thanks to MS Office this fear was over. I only really use Word from this package to be honest as I don't really have need for the others. I have used them all however and I can say that if you're accustomed to MS Office on a pc, then you probably won't be able to tell the difference with the mac version, only that the latter has a nicer interface in my opinion.
I use this software mainly for university related work, and I am always going between my mac and pc's at uni, sending files between several computers, and I can say that I have never encountered an issue with compatibility, unlike the software in iWork. The only problem I have had is with newer versions of MS Word, where my document couldn't be opened for some reason, but after a few clicks on the mouse I was able to open the file fine.
