Advantages: Working form home
Disadvantages: Could work long hours, Addiction is probable
All of the applications that I am talking about are incorarated in Microsoft Word 2000. The two pieces of software that everybody can find a use for in a home office are a word processor and a spreadsheet. Word processors can be used for all kinds of documents: letter's, promotional material, invoices, price lists and personalised mail. Their design and layout tools and ability to check your spelling mean that if you DON'T use one , you will be at a disadvantage in a world where people have come to expect high standards of presentation. A spreadsheets main job is to record data. Data in the form of numbers can have maths performed on it, and data in the form of lists can be counted, collated and formatted before bieng printed. In the days when PC's were to expensive for personal use, the ability to run accounts was the reason most businesses gave for buying one. But for home-based business users with a small number of clients an accounts package may not be as useful as a spreadsheet for recording business transactions. If your business depends on having a PC up and running at all times, you should install anti-virus software. Another useful utility is a Zip manager, especially if you'll recieved compressed files via email or the Net. To keep track of your time you need a personal information manager (PIM) and anyone in sales needs a contact manager. If you have to organise other people's time then you might throw in a project manager and database too. Two applications that were once the stuff of science fiction are now becoming commonplace; optical character recognition and voice recognition. Optical-character recognition (OCR) is the process of converting a copy of a document produced by a scanner into text that can be edited and saved. Voice recognition means operating a PC by talking into a microphone, either as a means of inputting text or a
s an alternative to using mouse and menu commands. OCR is virtually foolproof and is nearly always prefer able to retyping long documents. Voice recognition is an interesting novelty that is useful in a number of situations but more trouble than it's worth for the average user.
