Advantages: Great prices on most items
Disadvantages: You can't buy everything there (unfortunately) so you'll still need another supermarket shop
Aldi has done quite well out of the credit-crunch with loads of people trying them out in a bid to save a bit of cash on the weekly shop, and it's easy to see why once you visit an Aldi store...
Most of the stuff sold at Aldi is brands you won't have heard of before so you have to try and forget that you like a particular brand. But once you do that, it's easy to get on and shop - some of the less known brands are clearly trying to look as much like a branded product as possible so they start to look familiar very quickly!
The store cupboard goods, cereals, chocolate, breads, dairy products and pre-packed meats are all of a high quality, and the fruit and veg is good too. I really like the Aldi thick and creamy yogurts - they are the yummiest yogurts in the world and for 29p you can't really go wrong!
The one negative thing I would say about Aldi is that I don't think you could do all of your weekly shop there - it is great for certain items, but there isn't much choice on other items so you may still need to go to Asda, Tesco etc for part of your shopping.
If you haven't been to Aldi before, the first visit is like being at a European hypermarket - the goods are piled high on pallets and you don't pack your goods at the till (they throw everything through the checkout at lightening speed for you to just chuck back in your trolley - they have an area for you to pack once you're through the check-out. It's weird, but it works well as i've yet to see a queue in Aldi!). There is also a tendancy to buy things you don't need because it's cheap, which pushes your bill up and defeats the object of going there to save cash! You also need to be careful that you are getting the best price - whilst 80% of the products are at fantastic prices I don't think you'd be able to beat, the odd product in there is more expensive than other shops - it's like they've thrown it in to see if you notice!
So, if you're looking tot shave some pennies off many of the goods in your shopping basket, i'd say head to Aldi and try it out. If you can avoid buying the whole shop, you'll save a fair bit on your basics which is always welcome, esp. in the current economic climate!!
Summary: Worth a try to save some money

- 28/03/09 I like the food in Aldi, but I also like browsing through all the random other non-food stuff they sell as you can get some really good things really cheap. |

- 28/03/09 We only use Aldi sometimes for the reason that we couldn't get all of the shopping we require from there...Eleanor x |
