Advantages: Cheap, Good Range, Good Value for Money

Disadvantages: Till Speeds!

I don't know anyone who isn't cost-conscious at the moment - and for good reason! It seems that everyone is looking to tighten their belts, and in my opinion, the weekly food shop is a great place to start.

Aldi is an international chain of stores with over 7000 worldwide. It was started in Germany in the early 1900's and is now a well-recognised feature in the UK supermarket scene.

Whilst Aldi's stores are mostly small (in comparison to many modern supermarkets), they do seem to pack a lot in, with a vast range of products to rival most shops.

I personally like Aldi for the value-for-money aspect. I don't do my weekly shop at Aldi, but I do complete an 'additional shop' for foodstuffs, cleaning products etc. which I know are considerably cheaper. This makes a noticeable week-on-week difference and the annual savings are considerable.

In addition, Aldi also do really good weekly offers of a variety of goods with recent ones including motorcycling kit, DIY stuff etc.

The one problem area that Aldi seems to have is with brand image. Some people can look down their noses at it as a budget shop, but when the quality is acceptable, the ranges adequate and the prices outstanding then why worry?

The tills can take some getting used to, as there always seems to be an emphasis on speed. My tip would be to take boxes with you and load your goods straight into these from the till. This way, the packing is much quicker, you don't have to use plastic bags, and the boxes are reusable!

Summary: A Great Budget - Saving Shop - Give it a Go!
