Advantages: cheap, a fair range of products
Disadvantages: not much choice, some products are really cheapy tasting and looking
You are probably thinking the same as I did before I shopped here at this great bargain supermarket, what no brand names. I must admit I used to be a snob when it came to food. I would not eat any other brand of beans or ketchup, it had to be heinz!!! BUt sometimes circumstances change and we have to change the way we are. When I left work to have my daughter money was tight and we could not afford Tesco's or sainsbury's prices. Much to my snobby disgust I entred Aldi. To be honest I had got to the point where I had to swallow pride and enter. When I walked in I was pleasently surprised. It was laid out nicely and well organised rather than the tinned food jumble sale I expected. There was one type of everything I required. Ok there was not the choice you would get in other supermarkets. One brand of shower gel, shampoo, soap powder etc. When you are on a budget beggers can't be choosers. I went around the store collecting the basics and was so shocked when i reached the checkout and the bill came to £20. Our usual shopping bill was about £60. There are a few things that I would not waste my money on like some of the fresh meat and vegatables. They look a bit tatty and not very attractive. Also the meat pies should be called just pies as there is a lack of meat. On the whole though the quality is ok and items like the soap powder and cleaning products I would not buy any where else due to the fact that they work as well as other products yet they are half the price. My real favourite part of this store is the hardware section. You can pick up real bargains that they may only ever have once for a week then the bargains have gone. At the moment christmas cards are 99p and advent calanders are 69p. Yet they are of good quality. I think this is a good store for household products and tinned food. Now finacially we are able to shop at tescos I still like to buy tinned and cleaning pro
ducts, but meat and other fresh produce is definatly better in other places.

- 27/11/01 We find that the tinned food and biscuits from Aldi are just as good as the larger supermarkets sell. But, I do agree with you about the fresh and frozen products, these are a bit disappointing. Just as a matter of interest did you know that the check-out staff at Aldi's are some of the highest paid supermarket staff anywhere, because they have to memorise the price of every product. |

- 27/11/01 Unbranded tinned food is often undetectable from the expensive brands, although my sister-in-law once bought some processed peas that would serve as bullets. |
