Back catalogue is their forte and unless they're mid-price CD's you'll be paying through the nose for the honour of picking them off the shelf. If you want chart items (note: Andys chart has no bearing on sales or popularity) then you'll find a poor selection at prices higher than the bigger stores. A big problem is that only empty cases are out on the shelves and staff have to scurry out the back and find the contents. One member of staff told me they ... more

Andys records are the largest 'independent' chain of record stores in the UK. However, when you think of independent you immediately think of upcoming/underground/cult bands etc. Andys (note the lack of punctuation) is not that type of store. If you want to complete your collection of Status Quo, Camel, Yes or Marillion albums then you've found the right place. Back catalogue is their forte and unless they're mid-price CD's you'll be paying through the nose for the honour of picking them off the shelf. The chain of record shops referred to as Andy's Records all started in the 60's, when one Mr. Andrew Gray set up his own stall on the market of sleepy Bury St Edmunds, a town in the heart of west Suffolk, where nothing much ever happens, but that's another story. Now, back to Mr Gray, yes he set up his stall and soon he was doing so well flogging his vinyl discs to the hippy generation that he opened his own shop, then another, then another. Soon his shops were spread far across the land, and Andy was happy, for what he had brought with him was a chain of independent record shops that had not sold out and that prided themselves on their friendly and ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Andy's Records: Musical Maverick (480 words)

Andy's Record's is a rare example of how humble beginnings can create a nationwide success story. Andy's was initially set up as a market stall by a man called Andy Gray in 1960's Bury St Edmunds (a small, and very boring market town). The success led to Gray setting up his first shop, before a whole host of them quickly opened up in East Anglia. By the 1990's, it's stores had spread all over the south of England. The store sells the usuals: CD's, Videos and also the good old cassette. It also benefits from being less busy than many music shops than many chain stores, which means that you can browse at your convenience without ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review what a rip off ! (266 words)

When i need a cd, i usually go to a shop such as Virgin or HMV, but last week i decided to try Andys Records, to see if they had a 'Buddha' by Blink 182. I walked down the little side atreet wherein the Shop resides, and i walked up to the entrance, whereupon i was shocked ( and excited ) to see a huge sign saying ' CD'S, £9.99'. this was cheaper than virgin, but the same as HMV. I walked in, and went straight to the £9.99 section. I browsed through the cd's, but to my dismay they were all oldys cd's or crap chart cd's. I strolled over to the 'Alternative' section. Here they had a GREAT selection with some ...  Read the complete review

Premium Review Andy's Records: They're SO nice, but they're SO expensive too... (174 words)

If you're on a budget like me, you have to buy everything as cheap as you can... Yes, i am the one constantly rooting through the bargain cd section! Andys records is close to being my favourite music shop in the world, but it's more like a music library, i just go to look at cd's there, but there seems little point in buying them, as i can get them five quid cheaper down the road at music zone. And price is what it comes down to for me, it's just a shame, because it's so nice, They've got friendly, knowledgeble staff, They've got a wide, eclectic selection of cd's, They've got these cool little cards ...  Read the complete review
