Advantages: Excellent selection
Disadvantages: You can't see the products first
Argos is a one-stop shop for pretty much everything you could desire for your house, garden, children and yourself.
Argos is a large store which can be found in many town centres and also in a lot of out of town retail parks. Some stores are known as Argos Xtra, and they stock some extra products. Argos also have a website which you can order from and either get things delivered to your home or reserved for you instore so that you can go and pick them up.
Argos sell almost everything you could think of. Twice a year they produce a large free catalogue that they call 'The essential book of choice and value'. It lists products under the following categories:
Jewellery and watches
Kitchen and laundry
Health and personal care
Home entertainment and sat nav
Home and furniture
Garden and DIY
Gifts and hobbies
Toys, games and nursery
Sport and leisure
Photo, office and phones
Of course, all of those categories are broken down into lots of smaller categories as well. As you can tell, that covers a huge range of items. Each item has a description and a photo in the catalogue so it is a pretty good way to shop for most things. The most recent catalogue contained a massive 1798 pages!
As prices go I would say they are average. Most items can be bought there for a reasonable price but I would always advise shopping around and checking places like Amazon.co.uk, supermarkets, the Early Learning Centre and home furnishing stores, depending on what you are after.
There are a few things I would avoid buying from Argos. Their selection of laptops is very small and their prices on DVDs are very high compared to online sites.
It is also a bit tricky to buy furniture from them as you cannot try before you buy, and it would be a lot of hassle to purchase a 3 piece suite only to find it is not soft enough for you, and then have to send it back. The fact that you can't see things before purchasing is probably the main problem with Argos but I suppose it has to be that way seeing as they sell so many different products.
I would generally recommend looking at Argos for whatever you need, providing you also shop around a bit.
Summary: Great for certain items, but make sure you check prices with other stores
