Advantages: Good place to work, lots and lots of products
Disadvantages: Queues, queues, queues!
I worked at Argos for 5 years or so whilst I was at University, so my review maybe somewhat influenced by the experiences I had in the holy yellow shirt...
To start with, I'll say that Argos is good place to work - I enjoyed my time there and it's the place where I met my soon-to-be wife. Working for Argos is pretty varied as there's lots of different jobs you can do... stockroom worker, till operator, jewellery counter etc. Shopping at Argos is a different matter entirely though...
Argos is presumably named after Argo - the Greek God of Pointless Queuing... you queue to look at a book, you queue to get to the till, you queue to get your item and you join the mother of all queues if you want to take anything back!
This is slightly made-up for by the fact that you can get almost anything you want, all under one roof - if they've got it in stock. The range of products that Argos has in-store is pretty impressive, but go to collect it if you can as the delivery charge keeps going up and up.
A couple of quick tips:
1. If you make your selection at home, make sure that you check the in-store catalogue or the website before you buy as the catalogues that are first printed are often altered and descriptions can change
2. Keep your old catalogues as some items will be dramatically reduced and you can get some really good bargains just after the catalogues change in January and July
3. Don't take out the extended guarantee that they offer on electrical items, it's really not worth it
Summary: Loads of products at good prices, big queues though

- 28/05/09 Yes, some still will be. If it's an old product that's not in the new book, chances are it'll be heavily reduced. We used to have video cameras marked down from £400 to around £120 just to get rid of them... this is going back 4+ years, but I'm pretty sure it still happens. |
