For years we as a family have always done our shopping at ASDA, why? We have no reason not to...
In all the years we've been using it we haven't had a bad experience and it's reasonably convenient to get to.
We have gone from doing a regular weekly shop to just using ASDA as a top up shop as I know work at Iceland so make use of my discount.
The reason why I have liked ASDA and continued to shop there are as follows...
-great customer service. Apart from on a rare occasion the staff are generally friendly and helpful.
-wide variety of products. The ASDA that I shop at is a very big store and has thousands of products including interesting lines like foods from different cultures. They also do their own products in a basic range called 'smart price' using basic packaging and a premium range that uses more luxurious ingredients.
-George. Their own range of clothing, shoes and accessories is modern at a reasonable price.
-Other services include an optometrist, a butcher, a fishmonger, a pharmacy, a café, a photo developing service and a bakery where you can see them making the goods being sold.
- Parking has never been an issue for us we've always been able to find a space
-Apart from at Christmas time which is understandable the checkout time is good. The cashier asks if you would like bags and help with packing, they wait until you are finished sorting yourself out before going on to the next customer.
So, in all, I can't find anything negative to say which has got to result in a 5 heart review
A bloke went into ASDA and used the self service till. He purchased a bag of banana with a £1 price tag. In recent weeks he thought he could buy more bananas for that price if bought them separately. Low and behold the same amount of five bananas in the bag purchased separately cost just 54p in total, a 91% mark up. The chap filmed the scam and put it on YouTube. The bag had a bright red sticker on it saying it was a ‘great bargain’. Asda’s squirm excuse was that the majority of customers buy loose bananas and they need time at home to ripen whereas bunches cost more as they are yellow and ready teat and ‘hand picked’ and so labor intensive? I don’t think the child labor that picked these in the Windies for 50p a day are aware of this and more worried about being bitten by snakes and spiders.
I’m not a fan of those self-scan things and tend to avoid them. I would rather be stuck behind a granny with a trolley full at the kiosk till than do battle with all that beeping and patronizing talking that emanates from them. I also would be tempted to pinch stuff by not scanning them through. They also put people out of work at the same supermarket. But the question is are the supermarkets exploiting customers at the tills, knowing they have to go back to the shelves to dump stuff that is wrongly priced and simply take it on the chin, pay it, to avoid that patronizing robotic voice.
As far as the stores go Asda are no different to any other as far as prices go. The media say there are supermarket price wars going on that bring us value but that is not really true. Like banks, people rarely change their shopping habits and stick with their nearest supermarkets for convenience and less hassle. The supermarkets quietly work at a cartel when they price their core and profitable products, as we saw with the dairy price fixing scandal of 2007. We have our favorite free parking area, our coupons and Asda miles, and surrender to that lazy programmed loyalty.
Asda is a subsidiary of Wal-Mart and the U.K’s third biggest by market share. The advantage of that is they don’t have to declare quarterly or half-yearly profits and you have to go look them up at Companies House if you care. They proclaim to be Britain’s cheapest priced supermarket for 16 years in a row. ASDA sold a stake to a Wal-Mart holding company and the purchased NETTO. They also run the George chain. But Wal-Mart doesn’t like unions, the staff made to drop their union in return for profit sharing. That did not go down well as once they did they were hit with big job spec changes. They now do home delivery.
Asda is usually our main choice for supermarkets being that it is usually the cheapest and is the closest to where we live. We can usually find everything that we need and is usually cheaper than the other supermarkets.
They usually have good offers on whenever we go and we will normally take advantage of these offers if it is something that we as family like or fancy trying. We know what items are usually on offer and for exactly how much as well. The offers never really seem to run out. For example for the last 3 months at least Taylors coffee has been 2 for £5. Its a nice coffee and so whenever we have enough money we would opt for this brand, but otherwise we choose Asda's own brand coffee which at £2.28 a packet makes a decent coffee.
Asda's own brand items are usually just as good as some of the brand name products. And cost a fair amount less than the brand names. This is always handy when you have a limited budget most of the time. Our shopping usually consists of trying to buy things for my partner's children in order to try and keep them happy and stop them from complaining. So being able to take advantage of good offers and get a wide variety of products in one place and cheaply is a bonus.
I have noticed though that some of Asda's products have started to creep up in price. We usually buy a Don Simon orange juice 3 litre box and it used to cost £3.48 but when we went the last time it had gone up to £3.98. And other products have started to go up in price too which is rather disappointing.
Another downside is the lack of a loyalty scheme. Other supermarkets do it and it definitely gets customers through the door. This would be great if Asda started to do it especially if the prices are going to start going up. However they do have some products locked in price for example 4 pints of milk cost £1. So they are still the cheapest I just hope the prices aren't going to continue to rise.
Well asda for me is my local store, it is in walking distance and is very handy for top up shopping in the week as well as me doing my full shop there (not as often as i used to). Asda does have a lot of products available from food to cleaning to clothing. I find asdas range of baby clothes to be one of the best iv come across and always find my self browsing and buying items out this section when in store. They are amazing quality to well worth the money paid. Asda also does there own brand of food in store (smart price) some of these are as good in quality as the expensive brands but far more affordable. over the last 12 months though i have found that asda store has become very expensive forcing me to go else were a lot of the time as i just cannot afford a full shop especially while having a young baby. There was a time when you could go to asda and have a full trolley for around £50 lately i find that i have 2 small bags of shopping n it amounts to this n it barely lasts 2 days.
Asda overall is high quality and they do go out there way to help you, great store friendly staff just a little to expensive for me but its wot you can expect for a well known store at the minute as i found a lot of people mentioning the same thing.
I live about a ten minute drive from my local Asda and also my local Morrisons, but I alway seem to do my major shopping at Asda. Why you might ask, when both are so close, the answer is simple, price. Asda seems to be cheaper than Morrisons on most of the products I buy.
They sell a wide variety of items and their own "Smart Price" range are excellent value for money and taste just as good as more expensive brands. I tend to buy quite a lot of these such as kidney beans, chopped tomatoes and baked beans and find them very tasty, just check out my other reviews to see how tasty they are.
I find that it is easy to find what I want on the shelves, they don't tend to change the store lay out all that often so I know when I go in I know exactly where to look for my items. Their fresh fruit and vegetable section offers a good range of produce which tends to last quite a while, something which other supermarkets fresh vegetables doesn't. I know I store them in the same way, but Asda's items seem to last that little bit longer and my other half says that their grapes are better than Morrisons and he should know as he eats loads. They have an in store bakery and their fresh baked bread is delicious and when they're baking the store smells great.
Asda's aisles are quite wide as well, making it easy to pass people who've stopped for a chat, something which does annoy me a bit, but you can't change people. The store is also very tidy and clean and the staff seem friendly enough when I've had to ask them something, which to be honest isn't all that often.
All in all I would recommend Asda.
I've been told to lose weight.But your meat products have to be bought first to see back of label for content. I.E FAT CONTENT Kcal and salt . I still want to eat meat but choose the healthy option.YOU CANT DO THAT AT ASDA
I ordered the "cuba balcony set" (order number 10394512) it was a table and chairs for £30 and a present needed for 13/4/13.
That was on 30/3/13 with standard delivery "3-5 days" they do not specify whether this is working days or not, although I assumed working days which still allowed time for 13/4/13 arrival. However, I received an email the following day confirming it had left the warehouse. I was impressed.
When 5 working days had come and gone I called them and was told they would check it and call me the following day. They did- to confirm it had been "lost" since leaving the warehouse and were not able to re-order but could refund me. I accepted this and ended our call.
On reflection I thought this was just not good enough so called them again, the advisor apologised and asked I try again to have a better experience and gave me a voucher code to re-order online and receive £6 off my order and choose which day for delivery. I went away and attempted this. The code was no longer valid... I called ASDA and was told they could do it over the phone. My order was taken (the table and chairs again and some lights) but when confirming the details I was told delivery would be £4.95 - that can't be right I said as I can choose when my delivery is. I was told this was what £6 voucher was for. This was not explained to me originally. I had expected to save £6 on my order as a gesture of apology from the store & choose the day for convenience. I told the advisor I didnt care when the delivery came, take the £4.95 off and make it standard - it was already too late!
Eventually I received the table and lights but was it really worth the hassle?
My experience was - you pay for what you get... I wouldnt bother again.
Unfortunately I still work there. Hopefully not too long. What you said is 100% true. I thought it's happening only in ''my'' Asda but I can see that is common practice. You are treated like a rubbish, no respect, no equality, no appreciation, even if you kill yourself they would say that you don't work properly. All of this is different... if you are a 'friend' or family of the management. Ridiculous!
I used to work at ASDA. Location is irrelevant, it's terrible to work in any of their stores.
I do not wish to go off on a rant, so I will use bullet points.
* You are lied to from day one, e.g. "ASDA's a really good company to work for."
* Terrible hours, you're lucky if you get more than 13 hours a week
* The 10% discount is practically useless unless you're buying a TV
* Management use bullying tactics to get you to do their bidding
* They have a habit of making things up as they go along
* The uniform, looks stupid, and it is clear it is made from the cheapest material available
* In relation to uniform, the "winter" clothes for porters, warehouse and home shop staff, DO NOT, keep you warm, or dry
* It is horribly Americanised
* Staff must be referred to as "Colleagues" not "Staff" (Related to Americanisation)
* The work you do is never good enough for the managers
* There is a strict (UNOFFICIAL) no talking rule, which they enforce with disciplinaries
* They will hand out disciplinaries simply if said manager is in a bad mood
* Security staff spend more time spying on staff with the outrageous amount of cameras, than actually catching shoplifters
* Management will happily sack you for minor "offenses"
* The "Happy-To-Help" criteria, is irritating, and robotic. I've also come across many customers who do not like it
* Some of the rules you have to abide by, are juvenile, moronic, and actually disrupt productivity for some staff
* If something goes wrong, it is instantly YOUR fault
* Management are fans of invading your privacy. Meaning, if you have Facebook, or anything similar, they WILL try and see what you're saying about ASDA. If you are caught bad mouthing them, you are dismissed on the spot. Top tip, if you're an employee of ASDA, make your profile on every social networking site you use private. Feel free to say whatever you want afterwards
* The managers don't like to practice what they preach, i.e. They can have breaks lasting as long as they want, yet you're allowed a maximum of 15 minutes, and 30 minutes if you swipe out for it. They also break the "no talking" rule. A visit to ASDA will prove this, you WILL see managers stood around talking about football or whatever else isn't relevant to their job
* Any opportunity they have to cut hours, they take, without thinking about the effects on the employee
* You are not praised for hard work, only criticized for not working hard enough
* You are threatened with a disciplinary, or even dismissal, if you stand up for yourself
* They are completely anti-union
* Hours are dished out unfairly
* Age discrimination IS present in so called "fair and friendly" ASDA
* Unruly and abusive customers are treated like royalty
* You are expected to do everybody else's jobs for them
* Lastly, I thought the store managers were bad. That was until I met the regional manager, who wasn't even aware that the rules in the "Colleague Handbook" were changed several years prior to this encounter. Great sign of management when they don't even know the rules they're supposed to enforce. Like I said up there, they make it up as they go along.
So there you go, a not so short list of issues that should put you off working for these profit hungry imbeciles.
Summary: Moronic management, ridiculous rules, no appreciation.
I am disgusted at the behaviour of Asda's staff:
After a complaint, we were banned from the store. The security manager and checkout assistant were both rude and bullying. When complaining at head office, we received an ill-spelled letter from the local store in which the bullying security manager told us he himself had made an investigation and found himself right. How ridiculous is this?
I have two concerns now: Firstly, how come the security manager can investigate in an incident in which he was involved and make a decision as a judge as well as participant? Secondly, how can Asda headquarters delegate the matter to the local shop when we have asked for their help? The letter also stated that we are banned from the shop.
As it is our local Asda, we went back to shop yesterday only to be threatened with a call to the Police!
What kind of customer care is this? I am appalled at Asda which I have always considered as the top one of the big 4. Asda has bullying and insulting stuff and sticks up for them. We are disgusted!
Asda in Beckton East London:
Quite simply the worst supermarket I have ever experienced. I don't know what other Asdas are like as this is the only one I can base an opinion on, but.. I work not far from Asda in Beckton so I have used it for the past year out of convenience. only its no more convenient than driving a couple miles up the road for some decent service at Teaco. I just queued up for 20 minutes for stamps at the cigarette counter, two members of staff behind the checkout, yet only one was serving. This is quite normal for Asda in my experience, on top of the pressure they put on you to use self service checkouts, because only one manned till is open, just to find that half the self service tills are out of order.
Terrible service. Asda never again for me, rather the extra 10 min drive to tesco.
I live about thirty seconds jog from my local ASDA and so spend most of my life in there. There are many positives to be drawn from my experiences in this supermarket. Many people think that the produce is low quality - cheap and cheerful - but this is often not the case. Like most supermarkets it has three tiers of brands, consisting of cheap Smart Price items, brand loyalty items and premium Extra Special items. This means that there is something for every budget at prices which tend to be lower than most other shops. They are well-stocked in most areas with their bakery being a particular attraction due to their recent exploration of new recipes in the Chosen by You range.
However, in terms of the customer experience, the picture is less attractive. Customer helpdesk staff are often unpleasant in their dealings with customer. However, ASDA do something that most other household name supermarkets do not. If you are overcharged, they will give you a £2 gift card as compensation. This heals any wounds you feel. This happens far too often though as many of their aisle-end offers do not come through at the proper price.
I have recently started on line shopping with asda 2 out 3 times all the frozen items have been completely thawed out the first time I did not realise till after the driver had left .Two phone calls to get my money back no apology, Yesterday you have guessed it just the same .A nice picture on the side of the van of shopping bags with ice lollies sticking out the top It should not be that difficult in 2012.
I normally go to ASDA for a top up shop. Just a few bits and bobs here and there but i actually like the honest offers, they dont trick you with offers like other supermarkets and they have a great staff attitude. They are especially helpful when it comes to retruns. You turn up, give your reciept, they give you a refund, and that's it, no faffing around getting half the workforce down to check your reciept they just get on with it, and thats what i like, the simplicity and good staff ability.
The store is very clean, well organised but the thing i have trouble with is stuff constantly moves, especially in the chilled meats section, i often have to ask where things have moved to. I dont understand why they do it but it must be for a good reason. The staff are very happy to help as their slogan says and point me in the right direction. I have yet to come across a member of staff that doesn't know where something is.
The whole store has banners above rows, products and if there is a special deal on it is clearly marked with big red and yellow text, and a small line of text explaining what the offer is. The checkout is pretty fast, most of their stores actually have self serve checkout and whilst i hate the annoying glitches and moaning i get from self serve tills, ASDA actually have a system where they dont moan, i thought it was impossible but it doesn't go crazy when i do something it doesnt like.
The store normally has a straight line layout for the main store but george and the vegtable section is quite open and much easier to get round with a trolley. Trolley's are usually rust free and in good condition by the way, they must take good care of them.
The staff at the manual checkouts are friendly and offer bags if you need them. To protect the environment you dont have bags ready to take, and instead they issue bags as and when needed. Stock on the shelves is usually full, sometimes things are taken and the staff need time to replace them but generally speaking they are stocked up and i can find everything i want. If i cant, i ask a member of staff and they help me.
Overall my shopping experience at ASDA is a pleasant one and i enjoy going there without hassle. I would recommend their supermarkets, and ill be sure to review some of their own brand products in the near future...
My main supermarket to do my weekly shopping about 5 years ago would have been Tesco. Where I live I can easily reach Asda, Tesco or Morrisons and whilst Asda is nearer to my house, I used to prefer Tesco.
I'm not sure why I ended up at Asda but sure enough I slowly started doing more of my weekly shops there until it became all of my shops there!
I personally think Asda has the cheapest supermarket prices overall. It's own smartprice brand on most products is very good but as with all stores/supermarkets there are some things that you don;t want to compromise on. (Smartprice chicken soup is really not that nice)
There are always good value offers on and also 'rollbacks' lowering the price of some goods. I find that quite a lot in Asda is generally on some kind of offer/promotion for a round figure like £1 which makes it a bit easier to add up your shopping as you go round if you want to stick to a budget.
One thing I don;t like though- at the checkout you can't see the subtotal on your shopping as the cashier scans it through, the tills only show the price of each individual product as they are scanned meaning that sometimes the final bill can be a slight shock! I would much prefer that I could see the running total as I went. Overall though a good reliable supermarket with low prices on everyday products
I am currently on holiday at a relatives house and her local supermarket is a huge ASDA. I love the chance to buy there as everything always seems to be a lot cheaper.
This particular asda in Beckton has various sections. It has the usual fruit and vege, frozen and all the other food sections but it also has a large clothes and home area which is fantastic. You can buy dvds, bathroom equipment, garden plants, childrens and adults clothes. Literally almost everything in one supermarket.
The fruit and veg is very good quality, I bought a bag of oranges and they are very juicy and tasty. I also like their cold meats selection which is reasonably priced and full of flavour.
Asda claim that they are cheaper for brands and I think this is true, everything seems to be a good deal.
The staff however in this store are not too hot on customer service. At the self service checkouts I heard a young employee calling a customer stupid as he was elderly and could not work the machines. The man did shout back and then complain to a manager but the point is that he should not have been disrespected by a staff member!
What this ASDA now needs is better training, more checkouts open to avoid the staff getting stressed, and better customer service. They have so many good products and lovely clothes now it needs to be matched.
The asda here also has a coffee shop which is very good and serves hot meals, and a Shoe zone so after getting your cheap clothes you can get some cheap shoes to go with it. Shoe zone remains my favourite place to get fake ugg boots!
