Advantages: Seem cheaper than many other stores.
Disadvantages: Expensive alcohol, always seems very busy.
Having being a loyal customer to Tesco, I decided to give Asda a go since the credit crunch has made us all think more about spending money.
Asda is a little further away and therefore costs a little more to travel to their store than Tesco, but the saving instore tends to beat Tesco.
The store I go to is brand new. It has been there as long as I can remember on that location, but they have built a new Asda on part of their carpark and pulled the old one down. It seems a bit funny driving into the store carpark and finding it in a different direction!
This new store is set out almost identical to most Tesco stores and you would be hard pushed to tell which store it was if all brand names were covered over.
For almost everything, I have found Asda to be a fair bit cheaper than Tesco. Even when you factor in Tesco points they seem to be better value.
They often have many products priced at a £1 (or two for £1), which makes tallying up the approximate spend easier as you go round the store, making the total price less of a shock at the end.
I have found items such as pizzas are significantly cheaper, even when other shops have them on offer, Asda do seem cheaper.
My fortnightly spend has gone from about £35 down to £25, which is £20 a month. However this is not the full picture.
I used to buy alcohol from Tesco, but now I find I go to the off-licence. Asda is the same price as the off-licence and more expensive than Tesco (they need to make their money somewhere, I supposer).
This means, at least I am supporting a local off-licence business as well as using Asda for convenience.
I estimate that I save around £10 per month using Asda. Which isn't bad, the petrol bill in the extra travelling certainly is not £10 per month.
I have yet to buy much from George, but their range seems as good as Tesco's clothing, if not better.
The store always seems much, much busier than Tesco, however, their shelves seem better stocked in my opinion. There is something about half cucumbers that Tesco always seem to have an empty basket!
Worth the travelling and worth a go, remember that supermarket prices can vary from area to area. Also worth noting is the little signs in Tesco that illustrate prices of other supermarkets. Notice how Asda is either missed off, or is the same price. Says something, although you don't get any points at Asda.
Good store, good layout, most products are easy to find.
Summary: Worth a go, even you have travel a couple of miles more.

- 06/10/08 My most loathed supermarket - not least because of the Wal-Mart connection. You must wonder how they get the prices so low.... |
