Advantages: Good prices, and choice
Disadvantages: Can get busy
My local Asda is next to the Metrocentre in Gateshead. The hypermarket has only been open for one year, before that it was just a lowly supermarket on a different site. I have tried other supermarkets, but I always come back to Asda for the choice and value for money. There is a huge clothes selection designed by George, the ex designer for Next. The clothes are well designed, fashionable and affordable. They go up to a size 20 for the women in some styles. The childrens clothes section is my favourite, and they always seem to have some type of sale on, or as at present they are rolling back their prices in order to make goods cheaper. You can get a 3 piece set for around £12.99, or some trousers in my daughters size (12-18m)for £4.99. I can never resist having a look in the clothes section. The womens underwear is also excellent and some of the styles go up to 44/46 without being "matronly". The mens section is good value, and there are casual clothes right throught to smart work clothes and shoes. There is a music and video section. It is not huge, but has the selection you would expect from a non specialist music store. They also tend to have a few featured CD's for around £9.99 each week. The electrical section is excellent, there are TV's, videos, DVD's, phones, vacuum cleaners, and the list goes on. The prices are very competitive. Asda have lots of special offers each week, normally "buy one get one free" or "3 for 2", and it all helps save money. There is a deli, fish counter and a make your own pizza counter, and the frozen food section is extensive. Farmstores is Asda's own brand, and although a lot cheaper than named brands, I find the majority of the goods, such as beans very good value, and in no way a poor substitute for the more expensive makes. When you pay for your shopping you are also given vouchers for things such as free games of
ten pin bowling, or a special meal at a local restaurant. There is also a restaurant that will give you baby food for free if you are eating there, and if you find yourself without a nappy, they are more than happy to provide you with one, and the changing facilities are always clean and well maintained. There is also an on site pharmacy which stays open until 10pm. One area which sometimes lets the shop down is the cafe. Hot dogs are normally the order of the day after shopping, but more often than not, they have only large hotdogs with no hot dog buns, and give you the hot dog in a bap. It's just not on, a hot dog comes in a long bun. How can you run out of buns in a supermarket stocked to the hilt with the things!! Asda opens at 7am on Monday and does not close until 10pm on Saturday, then open on Sunday from 11am until 5pm.

- 29/11/00 Well done Nikki! I totally agree with everything you have said about Asda, I wouldn't dream of shopping anywhere else these days. We have a very large hypermarket in York which has been open about 3 years but it still isn't bigger enough for the amount of customers it has in at one time. It just makes me wish ours was open 24 hours as well! |
