Advantages: Good clothing range, friendly atmosphere

Disadvantages: Busy at Christmas

When Asda started doing their “George” range – how we laughed. It seemed absurd that the then poor relation of the supermarket world would bring out a naff range of so-called “designer” clothes. Now this George character has been around for about ten years and he must be the one who’s laughing. Asda’s clothing range is brilliant. The fashions are always up to date without over-the-top trendiness, the quality is excellent and the prices very good for what you get – although not as cheap as you might expect coming from Asda. I would not be remotely embarrassed to admit to wearing George clothes. I would much rather buy something from Asda than from Marks & Spencer.

As for the rest of the shop, Asda has done well to shake off its slightly tacky image to offer a quality of food equal with that of Tesco or Sainsbury’s. The Own Label products are good quality and there are extensive branded ranges too. Like most of the other supermarkets, Asda has branched out into household and garden supplies, gifts and a few books. I found it pretty useful last Christmas for small, stocking-filler type nik-naks.

The advent of Wal-Mart has not done anything to damage Asda’s rising reputation. It might be rather pointless and annoying to have someone whose job it is to stand at the door and say hello to everyone, but it doesn’t do any harm and it’s better than having surly staff who think you’re going to nick everything.

In the past ten years, Asda has gone from being a slightly downmarket, seedy sort of place to a cheerful, well-laid-out store on a par with the other major supermarkets, offering good quality, good value, and great clothes!
