Advantages: Low prices

Disadvantages: Poor layout

Our local Asda is located on a Greenfield site right next to a sewage works. When it opened around 10 years ago, not too many people used it and the car park was never more than half full. However, following the publicity of the failed merger with Kingfisher and eventual take-over by WalMart the usage has gone up exponentially and despite the awful smell from the sewage works the car park is nearly always full.

The store is open 24 hours a day, which is convenient for those that work full-time, however as this, seems to be the norm for most stores it can not really be seen as an advantage. In fact the converse is true in that stores that don’t open 24 hours a day are losing out on business.

Logistically speaking I find the overall layout of the store to be reasonable with clothing, music and videos on one side, frozen and chilled foods on the other sides and fruit, veg and non-perishable items in the middle. However, the location of individual products is confusing and haphazard. This is probably deliberate as I often spend twice as long as I should in the store and end up with a number of items I don’t really need in my trolley. On the positive side of things, the pricing of the products compares well with respect too the other major stores.
