Advantages: The best of stuff at the best of prices
Disadvantages: Things keep vanishing just when you've gotten to enjoy them!
UPDATED OPINION; 3/01/2001 Addendum 2) - addendum 1) is at the end of this opinion . . . The latest breaking news is that, here in Scotland, our first Wall-Mart is to be in Livingston, which I am delighted to say is not too far from either Edinburgh or Glasgow. I read some time ago now, that the Asda store in Minworth, West Midlands was undergoing massive changes as a result of the recent Walmart take-over. Whether the changes are to be a good thijg or a bad thing, remains to be seen. All I know is that my local store, the one situated in Clydebank, has got to be the best store in town for just about everything. The chiller cabinet is the best, with what seems like hundreds of ready meals and loads of those little things that help a girl add that something special to meal. If this situation changes - I for one will be shopping elsewhere! The range and quality make Asda's goods are in a class of there own (except for there sesame rolls, which I do not rate . . . what are they made of?) One BIG gripe that I have with Asda, and a lot of other supermarkets too, is that, just when you get used to buying a product, -in Asda's case, their own brand LOW FAT spread, - they say it's been deleted from stock! If that is because it's 'not selling', then maybe that was because it was hardly ever in stock in the first place!!! Asda's Low Fat spread was forever 'out of stock' and 'awaiting delivery' and I would buy up to five tubs at one time, - on the few times that I could lay my hands on it, - as it only came in the standard size, which I always considered to be a self-defeating situation. The FULL FAT spread is still in stock, always has been, and probably always will be! (and they say they are supporting healthy eating??) I digress. . . . I have had the
most amazing Indian dinner for two (Wedding Aniversary) from Asda and their Chinese food is FAB. The cold meat counter is the best and the staff there are always sooo friendly! (There have been one or two who needed a personality transplant, but they didn't seem to last very long) When the store moved from its old site to the relativly new SUPERstore then some thought it was a move too far, but the folks in the store have helped to smooth the transition and now everybody loves it. If Wall-Mart make shopping in Asda a less enjoyable experience, then they will simply lose custom;as there are so many other supermarkets around here to chose from, they will only have themselves to blame. Here's hoping they won't change too much. Another "Breaking NewsŁ item is that George ??, (forgotten his name) the man behind Asda's clothing successes, has left the combined set up of Asda/Wall-Mart. I have always admired his abilities and hope that he resignation is not an omen for the future of Asda. Addendum 1) I've just heard on the news that Asda are to expand the number of their '24 hour opening' stores, I'm not sure if ours is going to be one of them or not. Personaly, I think it's a good idea. What about you? Do you think 24 hour shopping works? Send a comment, let me know what you think about it. GG

't was a nice thing to happen but I guess I can't expect that to happen EVERY time I shop there (shame!) ;-) |

- 18/03/01 Great Op :-)
We just rediscovered Asda (we live very close to Morrisons but our branch isn't very good) today and it was great, although the car parking is still as chaotic as ever!
We wanted to purchase a garlic press but the ones on the shelf were all cheap-looking plastic ones.
My boyfriend found a solid metal one in the bottom of the shelf with a *reduced* label on it, but no price.
We took it to the till and the cashier asked her manager who replied 'Sell it to them for 10p'!
She tried it but the till wouldn't take it, so as a result she just gave it to us FREE! :-)
Everything else was really cheap as well, for example the chestnut mushrooms cost 12 p less than at Tesco!
Gotta write my own op soon! |
