Asda are changing. For several years now, their always large and imposing stores have been expanding to look like aircraft hangers, with high bare ceilings and an endless succession of thickly stacked shelves. Now owned by US discount kings WalMart, they are increasingly dragging themselves down towards the lowest common denominator of low low prices, and piles of brandnames.

Unquestionably selling name goods for cheaper prices than almost anyone else, Asda nevertheless doesn't present a pleasant shoping experience. It's brash, hurried, with (admittedly good) special offers exploding at you like fireworks at the end of every aisle, very gaudy. I always emerge exhausted and with a headache, which I'd spent more of my money somewhere quieter.
