Advantages: Asda has much to commend it
Disadvantages: But playing god with people's health is not appropriate
I offer the following for information: In America, home of the giant Walmart chain which has recently bought out Asda, many groups are organising a substantail boycott of all Walmart stores. The reason is that Walmart refuses to stock a number of items, notably prescription drugs, as it says that it and its customers do not approve of them. These are *not* over the counter drugs, but items which a GP (or the American equivalent) has decided that a patient needs for their health These include the 'morning after pill'; which is, or is about to be, available over the counter here. Women's rights groups and those who live in rural communities, where Walmart is often the only store for many miles, are particularly concerned about a store deciding it can and should over-ride a doctor's judgement on what medication a person needs. Personally, I won't be giving Asda any more of my hard-won cash, and have written to its head offices in this country and abroad to tell them why.

- 08/10/00 Zebra: I would argue very strongly that it *is* relevant; in the same way that Nike using child labour in the Third World etc was relevant to whether you wanted to buy their shoes.
If ethical issues don't bother you, fair enough. But if you have the information you can choose whether to support a company that takes part in these activities or not. Personally, I don't think the fact that it doesn't happen in the UK (yet?!) is relevant.
I agree with Philmar's point entirely; personally I just don't want to give my money to a company that seeks to impose an ethical judgement of this sort on its consumers. |

- 07/10/00 Although the information you have given is very interesting and controversial it is not really relevant to Asda in the UK. Hence the rating. Sorry. |

- 03/10/00 In the US this may be an issue, but here in the UK ASDA is very unlikely to be the only available shop, besides, their refusing to stock certain drugs may give our local chemists more of a chance. |
