Advantages: Low prices
Disadvantages: When you buy something you are supporting right wing gun sellers
I grew up in the States and have know Walmart - the comany taking over ASDA - for many a year. They are infamous in the States for destroying local business. They do the same thing in every American town that they go into. The build these huge stores that sell everything from food to garden tools. They gain customers because they can proivide low prices (big companies can buy in bulk) and they go to the other local stores and poach their staff. They then tighten the noose until the small 'mom and pop' buisnesses have to go out of buisness. Once they have done that the prices go up and they stop giving the raises to the staff. Also, they are owned by the family of Sam Walton. He died a couple years ago and was a massive supporter of the Republican party in the US. Because of this Walmart's business practices reflect the family's very right wing views. For starters they sell guns in their US stores. Despite the fact that a large number of guns used in shootings by underage shooters have been traced back to Walmart they refuse to take them out of their stores. They also really hate it when they are criticised. An example of this is in how they censor the music that is sold in their stores. Sadly, Walmart is the number one seller of music singles in the States. If they refuse to sell your song or album then there is very little chance of it getting into the charts. A few years ago, the singer Sheryl Crow had a line in one of her songs that talked about being shot by a gun bought at Walmart. When Walmart discovered that song the pulled all of her albums from all of their stores. Walmart has also been accused of pulling albums from singers they suspect of being gay.

- 23/08/00 Spot on! When I was in the States for a year, many of the people I met boycotted Wal-Mart completely, and informed me the exact reasons why - I never went in myself after that. But to be honest, I've always found Asda to be cheap-and-not-very-cheerf ul, so I have no problem keeping away from them either! |

- 21/08/00 Thank-you for writing this. I was going to post something along similar lines myself, but you've put it better than I could. Many women's groups are boycotting Asda, since the Walmart takeover because of their refusal to supply some types of prescription. I haven't been back to Asda and won't be doing so |
