Advantages: Great products, extra money

Disadvantages: Not much extra money

I'm always looking for ways to earn a bit of extra money, so 6 months ago I decided to give being an avon rep a try. There was an advert on television at the time promoting it as being an easy, worthwhile way to earn some extra cash - and because there is no upfront payment I thought it was worth a try.

The Avon catalogue had been pushed through my letterbox a few times and I always enjoyed flicking through it and had even made a few purchases from it, so I was happy that I could be enthusiastic about the products I would be selling. Avon sell a wide range of cosmetics, toiletries, jewelry, lingerie etc.

On my first month of being an Avon rep, I did little more than distribute the catalogues to work collegues, friends and customers from work. It was a bit of a novelty for them and I ended up getting a number of orders and earned myself £45 for not doing much work.

Ordering the goods was all done online - very quick and easy - and the goods are delivered to my door and then all I have to do is sort them out and deliver them to the customer.

The next month, because all my friends and family had recently purchased, I found it difficult to get the minimum order value and I didn't actually make any commission that month.

I decided to try putting the catologues through letterboxes the following month. This I found very time consuming and not much fun. I had to trail around the freezing cold streets (with baby in tow) delivering catologues, then go around collecting, then again delivering the goods. This earned me £29 commission for hours of hard work.

At this moment in time I am still an Avon rep, but I won't be delivering around the streets again as I don't think that it's worth the hassle for just a few pounds. I think that it might be suitable for someone who has more free time on their hands, but because I don't have much time with work and the baby it's just not worth it.
I still distribute the catalogues to collegues, friends, family and customers and find that to be quite hassle free as it doesn't really take up much time and I make around £25 per month from doing that.
You certainly won't get rich from being an Avon rep, however you might make a small amount of pocket money each month. It might be worth giving it a try - just don't expect too much.

Summary: You might make a little bit of spending money.

As mummy2harry is already on the case hopefully dooyoo will move this to the right category. As it stands it's NU as it's about Avon from the point of view of an employee. I'll be happy to rerate once it's moved.
