Advantages: Large stores with large stocks.
Disadvantages: Far too expensive.
I can still remember the days where anyone who talked DIY talked B&Q, they were pretty much the only DIY orientated super store and therefore of course got nearly all the business.
Nowadays they have been totally surpassed in my opinion, although they do regularly stock more options than the others they are so much more expensive for no better quality that the only time I will ever use them is if I have no choice.
It really did used to be a case of you can do it if you B&Q it but now you can equally do it if you Focus DIY it or Homebase it (not as catchy in a jingle but much less expensive). My first choice of the big three is always Homebase because their stores are very large very clearly laid out and their staff are almost always very helpful, whereas you can often ask for help in a B&Q store and never see the person again.
Homebase are already much cheaper than B&Q but they also have a 10% day or sometimes a 10% weekend where every single item in store is reduced by ten percent. B&Q do throw in some offers from time to time and when they do I take a look but even when the price is right in B&Q the service rarely is.
B&Q seem to employ only school leavers in my branch and they are more interested in carrying on or grabbing a brush and sweeping the same bit of floor for half an hour than actually doing any work and helping customers.
Summary: A good store just overpriced!
