Advantages: Good flexible pricing
Disadvantages: Variety of choice
This is a review of the offline Blockbuster service, as it is in the offline shopping section. This is in no way a reflection of their online service.
Where I live, there is only one option for dvd rentals; blockbuster. The only alternative would be to use an online provider such as lovefilm. I have thus far chosen not to rent dvd's online, purely because if I spontaneously feel like watching a film tonight then I can not just pick a dvd up. The delay between ordering and recieving is what makes the offline approach seem much better for myself.
There has been a blockbuster clos to where I live for as long as I can remember, so I have been using their dvd rental service for a long time now. Often, I prefer to actually go to one of the shops near blockbuster, and buy the dvd I want! This is a reflection of the service I feel blockbuster offer me.
Sometimes they have great offers on, and it is always worth checking their store as the prices and offers seem to vary between each visit. Although this makes it a little more difficult to predict how much the night in is going to cost, I find it to be a positive thing as you may go in to find a dvd you want within an offer.
What I do like about blockbuster is that I have usually found them to be quite flexible with their pricing and offers. I always feel as though I can ask to rent the dvd I want for however long I want, and be given a flexible and fair deal for doing so. An example of their flexibility is that a late fee was waivered if I rented an extra dvd. I really can't complain about blockbusters pricing. Only as recently as last week I went in, found 5 dvd's I liked the look of and had not yet viewed, and rented them for 7 days at just £5. I really could not ask for a cheaper deal!
What I raise issue with in blockbuster, is that I feel as though they are lacking in variety on many ocassions. One several ocassions I have gone into the store in search of a particular dvd and been completely unable to find what I was looking for. The staff are always behind the desk and so there is nobody to ask to point me in the right direction. For example this weekend I was looking for 'the boy in the striped pyjamas' but could not find it anywhere. With the film not being an old release, and a queue at the till, I didn't fancy a wait just to find out if they actually had the dvd in.
I must note that since the recession there has been a longer queue at the till every week! It seems as though people are much preferring a night in than out, so hopefully blockbuster will begin stocking more dvd's!
Summary: It has it's strong and weak points

- 04/08/09 Our local blockbuster owner said to me the other day I keep their shop running. I didn't know whether to take it as a compliment or an insult. :D I do love watching films. Brill review. Kirsty x |

- 04/08/09 I agree about the lack of variety. I visited ours recently and it was so boring and dull. Great review :) |
