Advantages: Great atmosphere, city centre
Disadvantages: Over-priced
Borders has to be one of my favourite shops in York. It's stylishly designed ( if a little soul-less! ) with wooden panelling. But this is just in general a really a nice place to be - sofas and chairs dotted around the place, music playing in the background, a coffee-shop upstairs. In terms of sheer range it is hard to beat - two expansive floors of CDs, Videos, books, magazines, etc etc My favourite facility is the easily accessible way that you can listen to any CD prior to purchase - unlike other stores where you'll be lucky to do so at all ( in my experience ) Borders are quite happy to set it up for you at the specially designed listening points. Nearly every time I go into the town centre I pop in to see if they've got anything I fancy listening to. Unfortunately at least for music Borders is over-priced - hence I normally listen to the relevant CD to decide if I like it, and if I do I'll search for the cheapest price via the internet. £13.99 for a chart album is just too much, and can be beaten by most other music shops in York. Books however seem to be fairer priced - although with a Waterstones, Smiths and various others nearby the competition is a lot greater. Borders have regular events as well - book signings, evening classes - making the transistion from a decent bookshop to a community service quite subtley! In general - Borders is a classy and comfortable place to spend your time, and so long as you stay aware of prices you can't go wrong!
