Advantages: Vibe, atmosphere
Disadvantages: Lost part of its charm, can be pricey
Camden market is situated in Camden, London and is a world famous market that attracts visitors from all over. Living in London myself I regularly visit Camden and the markets and it is very different to anywhere else in London.
There is not just the one market, but many that stretch quite a way. The vibe you get in the area is an alternative, punky, gothic one. Predominantly the markets and area sells alternative clothing, gothic clothing, fetish wear and punk wear. There is however another side to the market up towards the Lock, where crafts and arts can be bought. This market has more of an ethnic vibe, with a quirky, artsy feel. Unfortunately, a year or so ago, a fire broke out at one of the pubs nearby another section of the markets, near the Lock and this destroyed that section. There are several varying food markets towards the Stables end where it is hard to resist trying everything, although I do recommend you take time in doing so, far too much for one visit.
Camden has also had a revamp a few years ago, where the market stalls were modernised and put into more of a shopping like centre. I feel that whilst this is still pleasurable to shop in, it took away part of the raw edge that made the market what it was.
Over the years, I feel Camden market has lost part of its charm that once made it so famous, things don't tend to be so original anymore and the prices have definately gone up quite a bit.
Nonetheless, it is still a place I enjoy visiting, and it is great to just wander around, even if you don't buy anything, however it is hard to fight the urge not to.
Summary: Worth a visit!
