Advantages: Good service, good prices

Disadvantages: Underlay didn't work too well.

Having moved house we have had reason to change carpets in two rooms so far and we brought them in two separate transactions but both from Carpet Right in East Grinstead.

The store itself is nicely laid out with a large open plan area showcasing all the carpet samples you can look and feel and then the other half showing all the "off the roll" carpets and the end cuts that are for sale there and then.

Both times we have been into Carpet Right the sales assistants have left it a few minutes before approaching us and asking if we need help. They are certainly not too pushy and we were left to browse around for a good while on our request before we caught their eye again and they came straight over.

Luckily for us the store was not busy on either occasion and to be honest a carpet shop doesn't strike me as the kind of shop that will ever be so busy you have to wait ages for a sales assistant to see you. We did find that they seemed to be knowledgeable on the carpets and underlays though and this was a plus point for us as the second room we carpeted was my son's bedroom which is built over the garage. We needed something that would create a draught exclusion as well noise reduction as the garage is used as an integral part of the kitchen and therefore quite a lot of talking etc goes on in there.

We were sat down and shown all the different underlays available and we were advised to purchase the noise reduction underlay, which was not the thickest but was meant to reduce any noise more so than the other thicker types. We were happy with this recommendation and chose our carpet as well, after our own decisions had been made from browsing the various ones on offer.

We chose a carpet that was not off the roll and therefore had to be ordered in but this was no problem for them. We gave the assistant the size of the room and it is important to measure accurately before you go as mistakes cannot be rectified afterwards, for obvious reasons. We didn't need to work out our square meterage though and this was all done by the staff at Carpet Right.

The final amount was tallied and we were asked if we needed gripper rods or door bars. This was quite helpful as I had not realised they sold this kind of thing. We didn't need any as the rods in the room were all still acceptable to use so that saved a little bit of money. Still the carpet was expensive, with the underlay as we had chosen a really thick carpet to try and help block out sound and draughts.

We were told they would phone us in approximately a week to arrange a delivery date once the carpet was in the store. True to their word they rang and said it has been delivered to the store and because we asked for the delivery to us to be about 3 weeks in the future, while we finished decorating the room, we were able to choose to be first fitting on a specific day. If you can't be first fitting, then you have no say in the time they come and have to wait in all day, although if you phone the store in the morning of the day of the fitting they can give you an idea of where you are on the list.

Fitting is done via contracted companies and you have to pay them cash once they have fitted the carpet which is around the £50 mark usually, but is worked out on square meterage, so the bigger the room the more expensive it is. It may also vary area to area.

The guys who fitted our carpets were very quick and had it all done and dusted in approximately half an hour. This is super quick and I always check the fitting before paying them. It does state on the paperwork you sign in store that the fitters may mark your decor when fitting the carpet and you have to be prepared for this as it is unavoidable. We got marks in our living room and the bedroom but nothing too major although it is still frustrating when you have just decorated. I can't help thinking if they took an extra 10 minutes to get it in the room, they could avoid this but for them time is money I guess.

Anyway, we have been impressed with the staff and service at carpet right although the sound proof underlay doesn't really seem to block out too much noise but we are no worse off than before and the underlay is still 100% better than what was left of it from before.

I think Carpet Right have a good choice and are quick to deliver with reasonable prices throughout the year due to their seemingly continuous sales. We were offered money off on both carpets on top of the sale price when we brought and this was obviously received with pleasure but you can't guarantee that will happen every time.

Oh well, only four more rooms to do!

Summary: RECOMMENDED xx
