Do it yourself and you'll save a packet! (Carpet Right)

Advantages: cheap if you do the work yourself

Disadvantages: services are so expensive!

We are decorating and have been looking for some carpet. We are on a budget so need something that is good quality but a good price. Hum...not an easy task. We have trailed the length of Cardiff looking in all the carpet stores, including stores with large off cuts but nothing quite fitted what we wanted.

We found Carpet Right on Newport Road quite early on in our search and we were fairly impressed but they didn't have quite what we wanted. The carpets at the cheaper end were very thin and not the best quality. Many of them looked as though they were for offices as they were very thin and not very homely. The quality that we wanted was just a little too expensive.

On a second visit to Carpet Right we found one we liked. It was a litle more than we wanted to pay but we thought that we would have to give in and pay a little more.When we looked into the cost of underlay we were shocked. I have never bought carpet before but the underlay was the same price as the carpet and so would double our costs.

We then found out some more hidden charges. Delivery on a carpet the size we wanted was £35 and fitting was £2.50 per sqaure metre. Our carpet is 20sm so that would have been an extra £50 on top, if we got the carpet we wanted. We thought we were paying £150 for a carpet which was already more than we wanted to pay but it was actually going to cost more like £385! Needless to say, we went away for a think.

We decided that we would could cut our costs by not having underlay, fitting it ourselves and driving it away on the roof (we have a van) so we went back again. Turns out that Carpet Right change their offers very regularly and they always have lots of offers. We found the carpet we wanted was on offer! We got the one we wanted all along for £100. Brilliant!

We are very happy with the carpet, it looks great. Staff were friendly and helpful. They rolled the carpet for us and helped us put it on the roof. If you are prepared to do it yourslf and not pay the extra charges I'd say carpet right are a good choice but if you need it delivered and fitted your price will go up dramatically. I suppose it is the same with other shops but I was not prepared to pay the extra.

Summary: DIY is the way forward!
