Advantages: bargains by the bucket load, DIY disaster help zone, smells nice
Disadvantages: you have to part with money
My family and I, consisting of partner Annie and 3 year old (original tazmanian devil) Nicholas, needed a carpet quickly due to the fact we'd been living without for ages. I had decided enough was bloody well enough! I had to get one...and fast! The first step was to measure the rooms we wanted covering, a two room, open plan affair with stairs interupting in the middle. So I set off to work with an old rusty tape measure I found in the bottom of the kitchen drawer, several minutes and a little swearing later and it was done. So off we toddled to Carpet Right in Stockport, suitably hassled by traffic we entered the store, which is very spacious and smells nice too!. Nicholas was let loose from his pram and a side ways glance at the customer services clerk revealed that she was already nervous....(had she met us before....??) Annie and I looked around at the vast array of designs and prices, (not really knowing what we wanted I have to say) when from the corner of my eye, I caught the flash of blue pinstripe arrive.....whoooosh. Hello,I thought.... this assistant can smell my credit card....! The assistant was really helpful as it turned out, not pushy at all and he turned my crude measurements from feet to square yards in a jiffy.(I expected the knowing smirk of someone who's just discovered the awful truth....Trev knows sod all about DIY!..., but the chap was genuinely interested in helping). Then of course my paternal side kicked in......where's Nick?...up and down the aisles I looked....could I find him?.... could i ffffflamin 'eck.....eventually I did, four feet up between two rows of carpets, smiling as if he'd found the biggest adventure playground in the world!. When Nick was safely in the pram again....with protest and tears of course, we were asked what kind of price range we were looking at (CHEEP!....I said to myself...CHEEP!, being a tight git.....).
Annie having a firmer grasp of all things finance, relayed our expectations and available budget to the blue pinstripe...who didn't laugh, snort, smirk or cough........quite surprised was I.. We were shown several available designs, and each in at least three colours.... it's always nice to have a choice, especially as we hadn't actually arrived at a solid decision between ourselves. This of course prompted another discussion between Annie and I (through gritted teeth) because we have such different ideas on colour matching..............and according to Annie at least, I have the colour coordinating ability of a drunk wearing 3d specs... The blue pinstripe..using his amazing powers of claivoyancy, realised something was afoot.... and made a sharp exit stage right..whispering something like ''I'll be back with you in two ticks'' as he went.... too squeemish to witness any blood spilt I guess.... After a short time we agreed on a colour and style, (Annie smiling triumphantly....Trev looking slightly confused). Another blue blurr, and the blue pinstripe appeared again..., he worked out the price (£240 for a 28 feet by 13 feet carpet) and an available delivery date...two days, in the colour and style we wanted....brilliant! Two days later the fitters turned up, okay.... three hours late, but they phoned to say why.... which was a nice touch. The carpet was fitted in just under 45 minutes by two fellas who knew one end of a carpet knife from the other (unlike me ). Of course I gave the whole thing a close inspection.....to find any faults, gaps or wayward edges.....nothing, absolutely top shelf!........wicked and totally painless......well, apart from the credit card bill at the end of the month....but hey, it's not REAL money is it?....is it? So to conclude this rambling, POSITIVES :>) ..The store has a wide range of carpets, in all sizes, shapes
and colours and at very reasonable prices.( I'm a real tight git, I should know) ....The staff are really helpful to DIY disasters like me, and they understood, even when Nick completely obliterated a free standing display. I saw it happen in slooooow motion,I tried to get to him before he pushed with all his un-3 year old like strength, but to no avail,...too slow by far. The Carpet Right logo board keeled over like a falling canadian pine never to stand alone again... having split in about three places. I glanced over at nick, and I swear I saw one of those colgate type 'tings' bounce off his teeth as he beemed at me eyes wide with delight...! talk about being pleased by the fruits of your labour!(very cringeworthy...) NEGATIVES :>( ...you still have to pay and the displays aren't Nick proof!....oh and watch out for pinstripe-man who appears in front of you at warp speed... smiling,....scary stuff.. CONCLUSION ...Compare the prices, we did and they are a good deal cheaper than anywhere else offering the same quality of carpets and service....and the shop smells nice too!......bizarre.
