Charity Shops in DurhamNewest Review: ... I have seen several second hand objects at higher prices than in ordinary retail outlets. I donated some old university books to them early last year and was shocked to see the prices they later charged for them. One book was a quite big psychology text which I had bought second hand in Liverpool for two quid, it was printed fifteen years ago, but they were charging twelve pounds for it! Another example is a seventies book on birdwatching which I saw for sale for more than the original asking price, (about twelve pounds again), which I think is quite disgraceful. Charity shops used to be somewhere for poorer people to shop at and I still remember the days when you could get a really good bargain but unfortunately they are getting much more rare. If you're looking for charity shop bargains I'm afraid Durham city centre isn't really the place to go shopping. It used to be good and it does have a lot of charity shops, but prices have risen massively over the last few years and many objects are overpriced, in my opinion some ridiculously so - a true example; you can buy nice mugs very cheaply in a lot of places, so why do they think someone is going to pay £1.99 for one with a huge chip in the rim?
