Advantages: Bargains, friendly staff, you never know what you might find, money goes to a good cause.
Disadvantages: Some items can be marked and/or not in such a good condition.
While I don't generally shop in charity shops for clothes (although I will buy something if it catches my eye), I will check out their selection of books and nicknacks.
If you don't mind a used book then charity shops are great places to buy from. You can find books at bargain prices... anything from just a few pence to a couple of quid. The more organised shops will have them sorted into sections, either by type (fiction, non-fiction, childrens etc) or by A-Z. Others will just have them shoved on the shelves in the corner. While some books can a bit quite worn (as with anything in a charity shop), some can look brand new and you'd never know if they've been read or not! Mum is currently reading real life stories and in the past couple of week has picked up a couple of books for 50p each.
As I said, I rarely buy clothes from charity shops, but Mum always has a look. Today she picked up a blouse for £2 that had originally cost many times that. It's in good condition and nobody would know it's from a charity shop.
Talking of clothes... Charity shops are a great place to find clothing to make fancy dress outfits at bargain prices. After all, you don't want to spend a lot on something you're only going to wear once or twice.
I'm due to become an auntie later this year and charity shops are a great place for finding bits & bobs of baby stuff. Put it this way, why spend a fortune when they grow out of things so quickly?! My sister-in-law has already found a few bargains in charity shops, so while I was in Ledbury today I decided to see what I can find. One charity shop was selling baby clothing at just 30p an item! I found 5 items in that shop (all suitable for either a girl or a boy, as we don't know what it is yet) and all were in good condition and clean. Just a few steps away, in the same shop, I found a basket of cuddly toys... a little cuddly giraffe caught my eye and looking at the tag I couldn't believe my eyes... 60p and it looked brand new! I snapped it up and bought it along with the baby clothes. Bargain!
Of course, it's not all about buying... you can donate your unwanted items to charity shops too!
It's all for a good cause!
Summary: Worth checking out and seeing what bargains or elusive items you can find!

- 07/06/09 Agree on everything you said (my wife is totally into charity shops herself) and I definitely agree on the books. Charity shops are a great place to find some good classics properly bound, so they'll look nice in your bookshelf later!
Only thing I don't like about those shops is that sometimes they do smell a bit stuffy... that's why I prefer to wait outside when my wife's out for bargain hunting |
