Advantages: sell shoes measured in width as well as length
Disadvantages: Don't trust advice
When I was little I always wore Clark's shoes as they were supposed to be the best and had a great reputation for quality and considered to be the best for measuring kids' feet.
As an adult I hadn't shopped in Clarks for many Years as I considered the shoes to be old fashioned.
When I had my son the most natural place in the world to take my son was Clarks.
I took him to East midlands designer retail outlet that has a Clarks store there. I was very pleased with his first pair of proper shoes and found the assistant helpful after a couple of days the sole of one of the shoes was flaking off and the other wasn't and as he was still spending a lot of time crawling they looked like an old pair of shoes. When I returned them the assistant suggested he may be walking heavier on one foot than the other and said he wasn't sure if they could be changed as it was the sole but his supervisor changed them for another pair. Then within a week of my second pair the was piping on the sole which was coming away so I returned them and bought a different pair which were much more suitable and hard wearing. I did have to ask them to fit them; they just put them on and expected me to check the fit.
I then was happy enough with the service and in July I took my son to get his feet measured and he needed new shoes. Three weeks later I was in Clark's where my friend was getting her daughters feet measured. I got my son's feet measured at the same time just because we had waited in the queue anyway. I was shocked when the assistant told me he had gone up ½ a size especially as he hadn't seemed to particularly grown in those 3 weeks but bought him another new pair of shoes. He was in these shoes for months and after 3 months an assistant told me he was only just about a 5 ½ , the size he had been wearing for months.
The final straw with Clarks came when I took my son to a Store in Derby City who told me one of his feet was a 5 ½ and the other was a size 6 so she would leave him in the 5 ½. I left the store without purchasing any shoes but in my mind it didn't seem right that one shoe was too small so I took him to Brantano who did confirm the sizing but agreed with me that my son should be in a size 6. I was able to get him some Clark's shoes from there.
Summary: Trust your instincts if you shop here

- 23/02/09 We've had endless problems with the clarks here and fitting my daughters shoes. She measured her foot at a 51/2 but said her shoes were fine which are a 41/2. I'm no professional but even i know thats wrong! x |

- 23/02/09 I know Clarks have a great reputation for quality but the last two pairs of boots I've bought from them have both broken or become worn really quickly (although not quickly enough for them to replace them apparently)
I used to love going to Clarks for my shoes as a kid, shame they've gone downhill in the fitting. |

- 23/02/09 That's ridiculous about the sizes, the shop assistant must be stupid to think that you should squish your bigger foot into the smaller size! |
