Advantages: convenience, long opening hours

Disadvantages: small, not huge amounts of choice

The co-op is sort of the ultimate local supermarket, featuring smaller shops within neighbourhoods rather than the larger out of town sites other chains favour. i have been to a larger co-op, but i was highly unimpressed.

But, back to the local stores. My local store is small enough to bypass sunday trading laws, meaning it opens seven days a week 8am-10pm, which is ideal when you need something last inute or in a hurry.

The small stores are usually very well stocked, selling newspapera and magazines, meat, fresh fruit and veg, along with normal grocery items. some stores also sell fresh baked bread and cakes, and have a hot food counter serving warm sausage rolls and pasties.

price wise, in general the co-op can't compete with the larger chains, although from time to time they do have good deals. They also have a honeycomb card, which is a reward card where you can collect points every time you shop to earn you money off vouchers.

Summary: great when you need something in a hurry
