Advantages: A wide choice of items, good sales with up to 70% off, friendly staff
Disadvantages: Can be expensive at full price - wait for the sales! No free parking.
My review of Debenhams is based on the Barrow-in-Furness store, but the basics should apply to any branch - they can be found in most big towns and cities, including Manchester.
The Barrow store is the biggest shop in town; a huge department store covering 2 big floors, with a car park on the roof so you don't have to carry your shopping too far! Unfortunately they do charge you to park there, which I personally think is a bit of a cheek when you're shopping in their store, but ho hum! As for what the store sells - it has everything from womenswear, childrenswear, menswear, cosmetics, accessories, sportswear, lingerie, home items, gifts, wedding list...the list goes on! It really is a one-stop shop for all the family. In Barrow, Debenhams has also brought Warehouse, Faith and Jane Norman clothes and shoes to the town in the form of concessions within the store, which is great as we didn't have those stores before. In larger stores such as the Preston store, they also have Oasis and other concessions available.
Most Debenhams stores include a cafe, so you can take a well-earned break from your shopping trip for a cup of tea - Barrow's is on the first floor. They do a fantastic 6item breakfast with free toast for £3.50 (until 11.30am) and a lunchtime menu as well as afternoon tea. The store has full disabled access with lifts and escalators as well as the stairs, and is always clean and brightly lit. The staff will most probably annoy you by asking if you want to open a Debenhams account card, even if you're only spending £1 - but it is actually one of the better account cards out there, as they send you offers throughout the year and have special cardholders days where you can get free candles, chocolates and so on. They have 'spectacular' events every few months, with up to 25% off across the store, and even more for cardholders. Their sales are also what I call 'proper' sales, with up to 70% off - you can really pick up some bargains if you wait for the right time.
If you can't be bothered traipsing round lots of shops and want to get everyone's Christmas presents in one place this year, Debenhams will have something for everyone!
Summary: A one-stop shop for all the family.
