Debenhams opened in our town a few years ago and of course the entire towns population flocked to look around when it opened the doors, only having a few shops and a dowdy high street it was the most exciting event of the decade for us all. I was very impressed with the size of it and the vast choice of clothes and household goods, but I found it very expensive to be quite honest. The goods were of a high quality I must admit but a wee bit out of my price range. There were members of staff coaxing shoppers to open charge accounts and get twenty percent off purchases, but I relented being a bit long in the tooth to get into debt with plastic. I was surprised just how many people were paying by card though. I bought a pair of tights and got quite a funny look from the assistant because I wanted to pay real money! It is a really good store for choice and quality so when I had to buy an outfit for my sons wedding I went there. I wanted to get the best and I wanted it to look perfect. I had a great two hours trying on different outfits and hats etc. The staff were really helpful and kept bringing different things for me to try on. I felt like a million dollars to be quite honest and left with outfit, shoes, handbag and a gorgeous hat in a huge hatbox. I received excellent service and advice, my outfit was smashing and it did not cost as much as I thought it would, so it was a good all round shopping trip. I certainly would go there again if I needed a special outfit, but every day clothes I will stick to the cheaper stores. One thing I must mention though, Debenhams have a sale about three times a year and this is when the bargains can be found. It is quite normal to see things at half price so I do visit then and have a little spree.

- 31/07/01 I remember buying a really nice but expensive dress for christmas, only to find it in the sale on boxing day for £15.
I never wore it again, the second hand shop got it after new year.
I've learned my lesson now, never shop till the sales are on. |
