Advantages: usually has decent offers, prices usually reduce, a pretty wide range of electrical goods
Disadvantages: generally: staff, information, atmosphere, reliablility in stock and prices
Dixons is neither here nor there. One minute you will find a great deal for a great price, the next you'll be cursing their confusing and un-willing staff. That basically sums up the shop - but of course I can't just write that for my opinion. Credit must go to Dixons for having a such a rage of products in store, they have a decent selection of TVs, DVD players and discs, games and cameras, but ironically, this is Dixons downfall. A shop, to be good should specialise in something, if not, many things. Dixons seem to just coast along with a stock of admittedly loads of different electrical goods. The thing is, you don't get the feeling that the staff really are well-up on all these products and don't give decent enough and detailled enough information for you to make a personal choice. They just seem to know who best to operate the tills. I got the feeling that the staff only know the basics and not the stuff that the buyer really needs to know, they don't generally know what the competition has to offer. This is reflected in the store's stock. I have been to quite a few Dixons branches also. I also find that the staff don't create a warm, buying atmosphere or walk around their stores offering impartial advice, which, obviously, is their loss. The prices fluctuate rapidly, something that is quoted in the catalogue has a pretty high chance of being different (mostly it'll be lower which is a good thing) than online or in the store, so ringing ahead is advisable. Sometimes there are good offers going on, usually around the Games, DVDs and audio sections, giving a nice selection for a reasonable price. I have not bought anything really expensive form Dixons like a Mini HiFi system, DVD player or computer, so I can't tell you about that, though again, I get the impression that not enough detail or information is given by the stands or staff. I do mostly reccommend Dixons for small el
ectrical goods, mainly tapes, headphones, batteries, games, computer disks and videos. All are at a steady, sometimes very good price. You can't go wrong there. I think the bad press about Dixons is only really due to the lack of staff that specialise in ANYTHING but taking money, the lack of a comprehensive range of mid-expensive goods, and the lack of detailed product information. Three things that we really need! Its not THAT bad! Harry

their LACK of knowledge on what they sell and how embarasing it can be when YOU know more about what you are buying than they do ;-(
