Advantages: Competition means low prices for the customer

Disadvantages: Not the most inspiring store

Focus is cast in more in the functional category of store, featuring all your expected departments: decorating, furniture, tools and materials, lighting, flooring and so on. In common with the other big DIY retailers this is the season of offers when we are being encouraged to get out, use or work in our gardens or , better still, get the Barbie out and get cooking.

Within seconds of entering, I spied a brilliantly priced six-seater garden furniture set reduced from £350 to £149.99. Unlike a lot of the stuff I see in garden centres, this one appeared stylish, solid and well designed. I rated this as one of the best deals going so I promptly purchased one.

Focus DIY, B&Q and Homebase are the three biggies in the DIY supplies, and therefore the most aggressive players in this sector, although of the three, Focus probably is the least well known. Good thing for us customers is that they are all vying for our custom, especially at bank holiday weekends. Discounts of between 10% and 50% seem to be available in an endless round of ferocious competition.

Focus is not usually my first choice but I certainly got good value and good service, by the way as help was readily at hand from a member of staff to help load a heavy and bulky item.
