Advantages: look good and sturdy

Disadvantages: don't last and the leather cracks!

After 8 years of wearing Doc Martens I decided to give up and admit defeat. I agree with the majority of reviews here that they are extremely comfortable, hard wearing etc. I even had a pair with steel toe caps and they were still really comfy!

The good points are as follows (well so I think!) - they are really comfy, they are water proof, you can wear them in hot weather and your feet don't boil (or smell!), the soles have good traction for the winter time, they aren't too clumpy looking and they are good for working in labs as they are chemical resistant (very important for me!).

However, I eventually got fed up with the leather cracking across the top where your foot bends. All of my friends who wear Doc. Martens have had this problem so I know its not just me! I've tried looking after them really carefully (ie lots of polishing and not putting them next to direct heat when wet) but it didn't make any difference. After my 2nd pair cracked I cracked as well and swore never to waste my money on another pair.

I now wear army surplus assault boots which are just as good as Doc Martens if not better. They are made to withstand even more punishment and they don't care what you do to them. Best of all is the fact that they cost me a grand total of TWENTY QUID!! Think about it - £20 compared to £60 for Doc Martens! I've had my current pair for 3 years now and they are in perfect condition. They aren't even as painful as Doc Martens to break in.

If you have the same problem I had with Doc Martens stop wasting your money and get some army surplus boots. You can get them through mail order or on the internet and yes they do small sizes - I'm a size 6!

Fair point, a lot of my old ones cracked, I got a pair of nubuck docs, the suedey leather and I've had no problems at all, I reckon I've got at least another couple of years (18-24 months ATM) before they really need looking at.
And Jill monkey boots ah sweet memories....

My alternative is monkey boots, hard to find, so I buy three pairs at a time, last lot were £10 a pair in Millets!
