Advantages: something for everyone, very cheap, 1st time buyers dream

Disadvantages: Not all over the UK, no frills approach

Dunhelm Mill Shop is a first time buyers delight as I found out this summer! My parents bought me a house where I am studying for my PhD and then the realisation hit that actually I had very little to fill it with. I remember my mum telling me years ago that it is the little things you need when starting up your first home that actually cost the money and how right she was! I used to think saving for a hoover or sofa would be the death of me, how wrong was I! However, this is where Dunhelm Mill comes in as although you cannot escape some costs this place goes a long way in reducing them (as well as dooyoo!!).

Dunhelm Mill shop is a Midlands based discount home store (that is about the best way I can think of describing it!) that sells everything from pots and pans to duvets, lamps and rugs. They opened a big new store near to my home and believe me when I say that I could have spent most of the day in here and as it happened I did! Ok, there are not too many frills in this place, everything tends to be piled up, but considering the vast discounts I am sure most consumers do not mind. I entered the store and there was the bathroom section with piles of towels in all colours and textures. I found the loveliest towels with fish marked on them, with matching bath robe, bath mat and accessories. From 6.99 onwards for a bath SHEET I am sure you will agree that what better excuse than to have an airing cupboard full of soft fluffy towels.

Next department was the bed department, I found some of the best value duvets and pillows, you can choose from feather to hollow fibre filled. To cover these is a vast range of duvet covers. Some of the key selections have whole displays with all matching accessories like lamps, throws and cushions. I have spent serious amounts of time wandering thinking of where I can decorate next, it is a good place for ideas and home interior decorating. There are often bargain selections for plain sheets and pillowcases from
99p!

A little walk along and you enter the material section, if you want the flexibility of choosing the material for your house then enter fabric heaven! In my local store they offer a competitively priced service to make products to your specification. With a choice of curtain poles, tie backs and curtain accessories what more could you need?

Although my primary aim for visiting Dunhelm was to furnish my new home, I have to admit I spent most of my time wandering the next department which contains items like picture frames, candles, lamps, flowers and ornaments. If you read my other opinion on “Candle Junkies” you will know how I feel about surrounding myself with as many as I can and although I didn’t put Dunhelm in my Candle Junkies Top Five (I was aware they may not be all over the country) they are fantastic.

The final section in my store right at the back is the kitchen shop and this is another time wasters heaven. What can I say, you want something be it a glass, mug, gadget or t-towel and they usually have a few for you to choose from.

Reading back through this opinion I am aware that it seems like I go “fabulous”, “excellent” or “bargain” quite a lot, I just cannot help it, I would recommend this place to anyone. For first time buyers it provides a place for you to go to save some money yet have all the things you need, for more established home owners, if you are thinking of re- decorating or just want to add to your home and for those who don’t actually have a home as such, students, teenagers there are always lots of nice things to buy for your rooms!

Unfortunately for me I now live in the southwest and there is no Dunhelm, withdrawal symptoms have set in, but I will survive until my next trip home!
