Well even though I live in another country nwo Derby is where my heart is as its where I was born and bred and spent the first 27 years of my life on and off. Over the last few years the city centre of Derby has been a nightmare with the redevelopment of the old Eagle Centre shopping centre which was originally opened in 1975 and was showing its age compared to other out of town shopping centres and was losing business to places such as the Meadow Hall in sheffield which is 40 minutes away !!. Hmmmm the new Westfield centre in Derby isnt what i expected it to be. After many years of waiting, the centre finally opened, and i have to say, i was slightly disappointed. The layout isnt bad, and it's certainly presented nicely. However, i cant get over the shops... Okay, so we have a Topshop, H&M, new look, Republic, G star, JD sports, Next, Whsmith, Debenhams, Thorntons and an M&S. What the other 140 stores are is beyond me...many of them i've never even heard of, and will never plan to visit. It seems unusual to find a modern shopping mall where all of the shops are on one level. There are about 90 shops in the Eagle Centre, which are arranged in a spider type layout with shops along each leg. This type of arrangement does make for easy access but it does mean that there is no natural route to follow around the centre, without going out of the centre and walking outside around to the next entrance. The range of outlets is very impressive from small independent shops to large national chain stores with a great variety of goods at very reasonable prices.
