Advantages: Good range of clothes for size 16+
Disadvantages: Can be expensive
You will find an Evans store in most large towns in Britain and quite a few in Southern Ireland too.
They cater for ladies sized 16 and over. Their range of clothes has increased over the last few years and now stock everything from casual to formal. They have an extensive range of nightwear and lingerie too.
The shops tend to be roomy, well lit and usefully laid out. The changing rooms are spacious and tidy. There is usually a little corner platform to sit or put your bag on, and plenty of hooks to hang your clothes up as you wriggle in and out of various outfits.
The staff are extremely helpful. Once, when I couldn't find a skirt which was in the sale in my size, the assistant made 14 phone calls to other stores to see if she could find one and in time for a graduation I was to attend five days from then.
She had no success that day but phoned me on my mobile the next day to say she had located one. Now I think that is good customer service.
I have also been impressed by an assistant steering a woman away from a very expensive dress that looked awful on her. Her tact was amazing and it was obvious that she had the customers' best interest at heart. As someone who is never sure what I look good in, seeing that approach inspired me to trust their opinions.
The clothes can be expensive but their sales are very good. I often wait to buy something I like in the hope that the price will be reduced. (Skinflint? moi??)
The accessories that Evans sell are often co-ordinated to the clothes and are usually displayed to show the match. I find this helpful.
Their jewellery is well designed and lasts well. Their bracelets and rings can often be bought in larger sizes too. The staff know their stock and will make suggestions about what goes with what if you ask them. I haven't experienced any 'hard selling' from them though.
Generally speaking you are greeted cheerfully, asked if you need any assistance and then left to browse until you ask for help. I hate it when shop assistants hover around. I haven't found this at Evans.
Their clothes range from classics for the more conservative customer to high fashion for those that want it. I have been pleasantly suprised by the breadth of stock.
If you have a card they have a customer loyalty reward scheme. Points add up with each purchase and these can be used towards other goods from the stores. If you forget your card (as I often do) you can present your receipts with your card, next time you are in, to have them added on.
It's worth having a look even if you aren't sized 16+ just for the shoes and accessories.
Summary: A very pleasant shop to browse in.
